somebody has used in a political argument?

Recently, I had someone link me to a wordpress.com website, which had a chart ranking countries by healthcare system.

There was no contact information, no privacy information, no source for the chart, no numbers to substantiate the rankings, no data, no methodology, no author, and the chart was the only post on the website, made 3 years ago.

I decided I'll just use 'The Internet' as my source from now on, like this:

The Republican Party's website.

Furthermore, he was criticizing me for using Think Progress, so I stopped after R2, then started using the GOP as a source. Outright crazy.

Not in order:

1. Any answers, forums, or chat room site without outside sources (i.e. a unsourced claim).
2. Personal experience (i.e. I know bad gays, so all gays must be bad).
3. Sided websites (i.e. Obama's campaign website, the GOP website, liberal think tanks, conservativopedia, etc...).
4. Blantantly biased websites (i.e. Religion of Peace, American Rights Network, etc...).
5. Crap (i.e. what you posted).

Those aren't think tanks. The Center for American Progress is probably considered a think tank, but all the others are advocacy groups. The right has spent over $4 billion over the last 30 years on institutions like the Heritage, Cato, Liberty, etc.

I'm not saying the right dosen't have them also. They do. But there exist left think tanks also.

The worst source is when someone asserts a generalization from personal authority, in other words makes a statement without any external reference. When questioned, the response is to reassert the claim. This is called Bellman logic, from the Bellman character in The Hunting of the Snark who said, "Anything I say three times is true."

Even personal experience is a better reference. Personal experience is one instance of something happening. That's an extremely weak statistical basis, but it's better than no support at all. If the claim is "There are no muskrats in New York State." a reasonable refutation is, "I've seen them." Of course, the person might be mistaken, but it's better than a completely unsupported claim.

It's the job of think tanks and advocacy groups to collect and disseminate data that supports their viewpoint. The Cancer Society is likely to present data on the hazards of smoking and the Cato Institute is likely to have data on the costs of government regulation. I don't see how it can dismissed out-of-hand if the way of collecting it is disclosed. The counter is to find a better source of information, or to point out a problem in how the study was done.

Unsupported blogger or advocacy group opinion is worthless, but if the blogger or advocate has a source, then it has the value of that source.
