It's pretty obvious that voter ID laws are designed to keep many core democratic constituencies from voting, but the only reason it effects them is because they're less likely to have an ID.

I see a lot of people saying these laws are unconstitutional. My question is, how? How is proving your identity such a monumental task when it comes to voting, and where in the constitution does it say/imply that showing proof of identity to vote isn't allowed?

I am for implementing voter ID laws. Just make it so the law doesn't go into effect until the next election, but allow for helping people get their ID right away. Nobody can complain that people didn't have a chance then.

But man, in pennslyvania a judge is expected to rule on the constitutionality of their voter ID law, and he's expected to rule against it. Even left wing loon activist judges (there is nothing in politics more despicable and disgusting as an activist judge, on either side) have to justify their decision somehow. So how? Equal protection?

I really don't know.

The government must personally send a vote-taker to each citizen, so nobody will be unable to vote due to illness, lack of transportation, or laziness.

Everything else is unfair...

Lol, people are stupid.

Only rich, tall, property-owning, white males with an IQ over 100 should be able to vote.

Hey, f you buddy :)

No but really. Voting needs to be restricted to the white race alone. Preferably wealthy, protestant, straight, male whites over the age of 35.

And by white I mean real WHITE. Not italians or romanians, or other such nonsense. England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, France, and Scandinavia. But only certain parts of Ireland and Germany.

Actually, it should be restricted to White males, who live in my household, over the age of 18, that look like me, and have my name, and are me.

In other words, everyone but me is too stupid to vote.

Trust me, it's the only chance a 3rd party has.

In Soviet Russia, black men vote.

Could you elaborate a bit? Like, if I have to present and ID and so do you, except I don't have one, how is it violating equal protection? Its not like they say "ohai, you don't have the right hair color so you cant vote" they're saying "we can't verify who you are, so you cant vote". It just doesnt seem the same to me, but I could be wrong.

You should have to prove that you're the one you claim to be while voting.

You have to show ID:

to register for school
to get a job
to buy liquor
to buy tobacco

but not to vote? Sounds stupid.

To me those who attack voter ID laws practice voter fraud. Why else would you want to keep IDs out of the voter booth?

We all know that the ID laws are deliberate and discriminatory attempts to frustrate the voting process. That's established. Now the only thing that can justify them is if they are both effective and necessary....which they are not. A motor vehicle license?.....yeah. So, really, it's a sophisticated version of voter suppression, and we can't let it pass just because it appears technically innocent.

The thing is that it's become a partisan issue. In the current climate, these laws are gonna take out thousands if not more net democratic votes. If it flipped and made republicans lose votes, they would be fighting it just as hard as the democrats are now..

I agree with everything you just said, but that doesnt touch on constitutionality. Like, every law or action that has anything to do with voting will take out some voters. Like if my state during redistricting put my city in a heavily liberal district, I would be less likely to vote since I know my favored candidates would likely lose.

I agree with you that the intent is to suppress, but how could one possibly prove that, or judge laws solely on their intent? Idk man

Idk man. Obviously enough people to cause the big fuss. I've heard that 1/10th of Pennsylvania voters (in mostly democratic voting groups) don't have the required IDs. I find that hard to believe, but even if you make it 1/20 or even 1/50 that has the potential to decide the election in a close race (which this will be in states like florida and pennslyvania that passed these laws).

State ID?
Blockbuster card with picture?

come on.

Like, consider this. Say in 2000 New Mexico, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Oregon passed ID laws that reduced democratic voters by .5%. Each one of those states would have swung into Bush's column if that happens.

Or if the voter ID law took out Republican votes by .5%. Florida would've been Blue and we would have had president Gore.

Now say it suppresses 5% either way. Either Gore or Bush would've had a huge (electoral) margin of victory. Thats why the democrats are fighting this so hard, and the republicans defending it.

You have to show ID:

but not to vote? Sounds stupid.

To me those who attack voter ID laws practice voter fraud. Why else would you want to keep IDs out of the voter booth?

The thing is that it's become a partisan issue. In the current climate, these laws are gonna take out thousands if not more net democratic votes. If it flipped and made republicans lose votes, they would be fighting it just as hard as the democrats are now..

Politics aside, it should be common sense to ask for ID when you're taking something with your name on it. Especially something as sensitive as a ballot.

Always politics and never common sense with some people...

The Feds keep an official list of illegal immigrants. The State of Florida wanted a copy of the list so they could check voters rolls against it. The Department Of Justice refused to provide the list. Recently a Court ruled that DOJ had to turn it over.

Bush won Florida by 527 votes in 2000. No one knows how many illegals are now voting Florida, but it could easily be tens of thousands. I think it's clear the Democrats are afraid of losing the illegal vote.

That much is clear. It's a real shame that the democratic party has fallen so low that they want the votes from non citizens. But I cant say the republicans wouldnt be doing the same thing if the illegals favored them as overwhelmingly as they currently favor democrats.

Clearly.

Luckily, we got the list and purged the voter rolls anyways. Thank you Governor Scott. (I'm from Florida.)

The Judge can enforce his own ruling than.... Judicial Review is a form of common law aka case law. It can therefore only be enforced within the courts. Nothing a judge says can compel the other branches of government to do or not do something, but they can compel lower courts to abide by their ruling. The reason the executive officials read Miranda rights to suspects is not because they are compelled by the courts, but rather the suspect can be freed by the courts if they don't read them their rights. Unless the voter takes their case to the court, after being turned away from the polls, it really is pointless ruling.
