So the new Red Dawn is coming out soon. It is a remake of the original, except they've replaced the Soviets with the Chinese. Actually they decided to be politically correct and replace the Chinese with the North Koreans, and justified it by giving the North Koreans a doomsday weapon. I was watching this trailer and I all that went through my head was, "what the F, these political correct mofos just ruined Red Dawn."

What made the original Red Dawn so great was that it was plausible. In the beginning of the film they had an opening that told us about some things that happened that lead to the war, e.g, Europe becoming neutral and Central America being swept by communist revolution. It was pretty freaking cool to see some kids go toe to toe with the Soviet Union, whom were the big bads not only in the movie, but also in real life.

At any rate, it really ticks me off to see how far we've regressed. We're so worried about offending a corrupt authoritarian government that we couldn't make them the bad guys in our movie? This isn't the first time either, most mainstream games and movies that involve the USA getting invaded switch China out with North Korea, making up some nonsensical plot device to justify it. Why the hell can't I just enjoy watching some kids shoot some chinese communists? Why do my movies have to be politically correct all the time?

I should add that Red Dawn was truly great, because it was a movie about patriotism and the price of freedom. It put a struggle for freedom in a modern, American context that we could all relate to and understand. Even though the Soviet Empire is gone it is still a good movie to watch, because it can help the average person understand why foreign wars are a bad idea.

The message was delivered so well, because of the absence of political correctness. We had a plausible threat and villain, and the violence and drama were raw and very real. I can tell that this remake is going to be nothing like the original, and that it will be nothing short of action porn with no underlying message or lessons.

A prime example is the difference between the scene where the main character's father is killed in the original movie, and in the remake. In the original they were all lined up, singing the national anthem in defiance while the mayor that betrayed them looked on; as they were executed, you could see that the mayor finally realized the human cost of his betrayal, but that he was simply too much of a coward to do anything about it.

In the new movie the dad just calls them a bunch of SOBs and gets shot in the head.

They did this with Indiana Jones too, they were always involved with Nazis, but when the USSR crumbled, they put them as the adversary instead.

No kidding, North Korea can't even feed themselves and they are trying to say this is plausible? I'd like to see it be the Russians again, or maybe Russia and China.
Also It'd be better if it was a smaller town out west.
They should have just done the exact same movie actually.

I'll bet whoever made this movie sniffed their noses at having it take place in Texas again. This whole remake just makes me want to punch somebody in the face.

Y'all are forgetting the 'conomics o' the movie business:

1. Crappy action films usually get more money internationally than domestically
2. China has a lot of people who watch crappy American action films.
3. Businesses cannot distribute films in China without government permission.
4. The Chinese government is a bunch of humorless d*cks.

Examples (not just sh!tty action movies either)

Terminator 2: Domestic 204 million, Foreign: 315 million

The Avengers: Domestic 617 million, Foreign 863 million

Lord of the Rings: Two Towers: Domestic 342 million, Foreign 583 million

This has a rather irritating side effect of studio pressures for action films to minimize the importance of dialogue (since it would be in subtitles for foreign audiences) and character-driven plots (cultural specificity restricts market + relies on dialogue/culturally-specific gesturing).

The Soviets were the bad guys because it took place 20 years later. It was the 1950s in the Crystal Skull, it wasn't the 1930s anymore. It explained the fact that he had a teenage son. I don't think it had much to do with PC, just who we were at war with at the time in the movie.

Terminator 2 is an awesome movie.

Homefront's story was pretty good for an FPS...

In the original Cuba invades the US along with the Soviets. I'd say that that's just as plausible as North Korea doing it, although with Soviet help I suppose it'd be possible.

It wasn't just Cuba, it was like a Central American communist coalition of some sort. You're right though, a lot of the baddies weren't Soviet, but at least the Soviets were there. Also, there was a point to having the Cubans there, because they provided a contrast to the Soviets, because they sympathized with the American resistance due to their history of resistance in their home countries.

Switching from Chinese to North Koreans was just blatant back peddling on the part of the studio. Hell, they did it post production too, which makes it even worse.

Haha, I can imagine them digitally altering the costumes and sh!t.

The thing is, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 is coming out soon, and in that the Chinese are (one of) the bad guys, and yet NOBODY has said ANYTHING about it. I guess this is different because it's an all out war rather that a covert or proxy war?
