Oh a vote for Gary Johnson is a wasted vote? So then a vote for Obama in say GA is a wasted vote. And a Romney vote in California is a waste

Seems pretty straightforward and sensible to me.

Technically, Gary Johnson has less than 1% chance to win. Mitt Romney has actually lots of chances to win. Thus, a vote for Gary Johnson is more of a vote for a pererenial candidate.

I weep for humanity when people think that votes for Gary Johnson are to help him win the current election.

I don't think it is a wasted vote on two levels.

1: I think it is 5% of the vote, but if Johnson (or any other candidate/party) reaches this threshold of the popular vote, then next cycle, their party (at least for president) gets funding. This could be the start of a new party to challenge the old, or the start of a three party system, federally.

2: For simplicity, those voting for Johnson would most likely vote for the Republican candidate, right? And, unhappy Republicans may vote for Johnson (or another third party). So, it could be argued that a vote for Johnson is a vote for the GOP to move "in the right direction" or chance losing its base.

It's a wasted vote because you are voting for an ideological party, not a coalition party. When ever an ideological party runs against a coalition party they will be creamed. Unless of course the ideological party manages to get enough supporters that they are equal to or greater than he coalition party.

Gary Johnson being a minority candidate will never receive enough support, and voting for him is like voting for your mom; it's pointless because he will never receive enough votes. That's why Ron Paul ran as a Republican in 2008.

likewise running against someone of the same party after the primaries is a stupid move that only serves to sabotage your own party.

It's not pointless. Whether Ron Paul gets in office or not doesn't discount that he virtually singlehandedly changed the political landscape. Change is slow, and he's spawned legions of people who forgot about laissez-faire ideologies. His true impact will be felt 5-10 years down the line.

So, it isn't pointless.

Appointing your own hangman is pointless, not to mention completely idiotic.

I know this was suggested before, but why don't we start a thread where a person from the right and from the left both agree to vote for Johnson instead of Romney or Obama to ensure that neither would be helping one of the two candidates win the election?

And yes, it would require that you afford strangers on the internet a good deal of trust.

Pretty much this. No one is living under the illusion that Johnson will win. They choose someone they genuinely feel would do an infinitely better job than the Status Quo.

Choosing between Romney and Obama is like choosing between Syphillis and Gonorhea. I'd rather choose the cure for both than trying to decide which one will suck less.

I have friends on both the right and left who are committed to voting for Johnson or Paul on the sole pretense that they believe in them versus voting for the lesser of two evils. What a novel thought!
