CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Just as Democrats are gaveling in their convention Tuesday, the federal government likely will announce another dubious milestone — $16 trillion in total federal debt.

In an election already focused on domestic issues of jobs, spending and deficits, the $16 trillion number is likely to underscore just how much is at stake in November for both parties, which are offering dramatically different ways to begin to eat away at the deep hole.

Read more: Debt to hit $16T in time to crash Democratic convention - Washington Times http://www.washingtontimes.com...

The debt clock http://www.usdebtclock.org... has told us that we are headed at 16 trillion as I type this message. How is this going to hurt Obama?

In 2008, Barack Obama stated that adding 4 trillion dollars is unpatriotic and irresponsible. Now, he has added in his one term, 6 trillion dollars. At January 20, 2012 -- inauguration day, the debt stood at $10,626,877,048,913.08 (http://cnsnews.com... ). Today, Obama has almost doubled that. If Obama wins re-election, we will reach 22 trillion dollars in debt.

So much for cutting the deficit in half and lowering unemployment!

Don't fall into the mistake of thinking the Republicans would have done anything less. Remember until this real estate bubble burst, the republicans ran record deficits in terms of $(I will admit not %.)

I'm not advocating Repub or Dem. Just realize that much of the deficits of the last 4 years have the Repub written all over them along with obama.

In fact it would be reasonable to assume had the Repubs been in office the deficits would have been the same or even more. Deficit spending either in form of gov spending, tax breaks, or both is the MO of both parties.

Agreed. But the current republican plan makes more sense.

Honestly, Gary and Romney have good experience and record with the debt. Especially with Ryan. I want our current governor to become president. Richardson gave us record deficits: Martinez gave us a surplus WITHOUT RAISING TAXES.

Now that I think of it, most people have a better record (not hard) then Obama.

Romney/Ryan are way too conservative. They are going to alienate a lot of people.

Governments are incapable of solving complex problems, and often make them worse. I hope you come to the conclusion soon that Republicans and Democrats are essentially the same party.

^ This to the max. People cant seem to wrap their heads around the facts that 1) Presidents dont have that much power over the economy compared to Congress or especially the Fed 2) It takes a lot of cooperation to really attack the debt and with a divided Congress neither Obama nor Romney nor any other half baked third party candidate will be able to organize enough of an effort to even begin slowing down the debt. And 3) The national debt is just a ruse for politicians to get into office, when they actually do get into office the national debt immediately becomes a minor issue to everything else.

An important fact needs to be kept in mind: the fiscal year that the Federal Government uses to calculate spending runs from September, not January.

The current President began his term in January, when the Bush fiscal year was still in effect. In fact, the first nine months of Obama's term was entirely the fiscal responsibility of Congress and the Bush Administration, as that fiscal year did not end until then.

This was also the period in which most of the "Obama Spending Spree" occurred.
The fact is that government spending has slowed under Obama versus Bush.

Critical for his discussion, is to determine how much of the spending under Obama is represented by policies that he has authored or supported, and how much of the spending is the result of policies that he has opposed, such as continuing tax cuts for the wealthy and these unfunded wars.

Regardless of party affiliation, these are the main causes of our national debt problem. Regardless of party affiliation, these are the main things we need to consider when we look for ways to reduce our debt.

What a totally ridiculous answer. The system is poised to collapse, and it has nothing to do with Obama or Bush. I understand that sheep will continue to think, act, and walk like sheep.
