Here's the deal. Let's imagine you get to pick which situation you want to live in. Everything in each situation is exactly the same, except for the amount of money you make and what your social standing is.

In Country A, you can earn $100,000/year, and be in the top 30% by income.
In Country B, you can earn $50,000/year, and be in the top 10% by income.

Which situation would you pick? I would pick Country A.

I pick Country B, because I get to lord it over 90% instead of only 70%.

Who cares if I actually realize less benefits? I'm still better than a greater percentage!

Really? Losing half of your income is worth it if you get bragging rights over 20% more of everyone else to you? That seems like a pretty bad compromise in my opinion I would much rather live in country A.

I hope people are serious, because I'm trying to test a theory.

I've run across several people lately who would actually prefer B over A... so it doesn't surprise me.

That's why I advocate using the sarcasm font.

No. They would rather make less money in a poorer country, so they could be part of the 'elite'.

Provided that the dollars in both countries are of equal buying power, definitely Country A.

Country A
