The number of unemployed Americans decreased by 456,000 last month alone, reducing the national unemployment rate by .3% http://www.cbsnews.com... . It seems like every time something goes awry in the Obama campaign, something else serendipitously redeeming resurfaces immediately. If there is a God, he clearly has every intention of keeping this man in office.

I'd say "surreptitiously" is more accurate rather than "serendipitously". This rate has dropped and is dropping predominantly due to people LEAVING the work force and giving up looking for jobs. Any "financial news" source worth its salt will tell you that. In the end, there are millions of less Americans working than when Obama took office.

Does this figure take into account the effect of people leaving the workforce?

There actually has been an increase in the labor force and the numbers employed.

August - 142,101,000 employed
September - 142,974,000 employed

Obama had nothing to do with unemployment falling to 7.8%. Anyone who things the President had something to do with this needs a reality check. Perhaps John Stossel's No They Can't

That's really bad. Recoveries should occur faster. Regardless, real unemployment is near 14.7%.

Well unemployment naturally falls to its "natural rate of unemployment" in the long run anyways. Also, lets not forget that the Fed's quantiative easing, round 3 is probably doing quite a bit to improve the economy. Something Obama has nothing to do with.

000ike. What policies do you think Obama has enacted recently that has been causing the unemployment rate to lower?

I too am curious at this. Is the stimulus finally taking affect? Will we be seeing that projected 5.7% unemployment soon?

That's what I thought at first, but the indicators this time are all pointing towards this being a result of more people being hired not people leaving the workforce.

None. However, the president still receives sole blame for issues that he's powerless against, the unemployment rate, coupled with his broken promise to keep it under 8%, has been a salient talking point among conservatives and especially the loudmouth flipflopper that's challenging his legacy. I find it not just dishonest, but completely incorrigible to take discredit him when something actually goes well.

My issue is with the inconsistency for the sake of partisanship.

However, Obama used the stimulus bill and kept deficit spending high as an excuse to lower unemployment.

If the narrative is now that Obama can't do anything to reduce unemployment and that he's just under the tides of economic conditions, then that makes for a really bad case for putting us deeper into debt.

Actually, I really do think there's a good argument to be made that Obama's policies (such as the stimulus, banning offshore drilling, blocking the keystone pipeline, ect.) contributed to the unemployment rate, and the recover is just a natural factor outside of his control.

The problem I have with that argument though is that it's really really impossible to quantify. Other than the specific projects blocked like the keystone pipeline there is no possible way assess what policies contributed to what. Historical indications tell us that the recover should have been stronger, but correlation=/=causation so who knows

The only thing govt can do is stifle employment it can not create employment. If govt could create jobs, why doesn't it just hire everyone. Problem solved. Anyone who is intellectually honest knows that those employment figures are a complete load of crap. Oh how surprising it dropped below 8% just in time for the elections. Then it will "Unexpectedly" rise back up to closer to 9%. As predictable as the sun coming up in the morning. The actual unemployment/under employment rate is closer to 15 % if you factor in that almost all new jobs created are low wage and part time jobs. Not to mention there are fewer jobs available to have than when Obama took office.

When you can mention this when other people are criticizing the president, instead of ignoring it for the sake of looking moderate, then you'll have a point.....until then your comment is really quite random, selective, and irrelevant.

When you can mention this when other people are criticizing the president, instead of ignoring it for the sake of looking moderate, then you'll have a point.....until then your comment is really quite random, selective, and irrelevant.

I mention this all the time!

Again, since no other liberal has answered this question, I'll ask you. Why did Obama run deficit spending and pass a stimulus bill to create jobs If he has zero effect on the economy?

Do you really think the differences between nation economies comes down to cultural, genetic, and natural resource differences and government has no role in the economy?

The stimulus bill was meant to help states meet their budget shortfalls in the immediate aftermath of the recession, it was the council of his economic advisers that came out saying it would create jobs and keep unemployment under 8%. http://www.politifact.com...

First off, the well being of world economies overseas, the strength of the dollar overall, and countless other factors define the economy as well. Secondly, im arguing that the president has little to no influence on the economy, the FED has WAY more impact on the economy then the president, and so do other parts of government. Government altogether has an impact on the economy and certainly serves a role, but the President has a very little influence.

Oh come on. The Stimulus was obviously made to create jobs. Only a few of it was used for state government spending, which was earmarked anyways.

Okay, but the President has strong influence on the legislative branch. Obviously regulations, property rights, contract law, and infrastructure play huge roles in the economy.

Ok turns out I f*cked up on the help states meet their budgets thing because the stimulus was actually meant to help people get through the recesion by immediate tax cuts along with a few other things including earmarks for state spending

This is true when the Legislative branch actually works with the president. When they dont get along the legislative branch does whatever the f*ck it wants whether the President likes it or not.
