The pulsating US election is over, and it's been the topic of the politics section for months. Why then is no attention being paid to the upcoming Chinese leadership transition, which begins in merely a day or 2? The transition is one of the most important in decades (ie. 7 of the 9 members of the Politburo Standing Committee have to retire as per restrictions) , and has a similar significance to the US election.
Indeed, given the turmoil following the scandal surrounding Bo Xilai, and the fact that the the American presidential election has produced a situation of gridlock (either side winning convincingly would be better for various reasons) , it's quite possible that the Chinese leadership transition is more important than the presidential election.
I'm speaking from an Australian perspective, where we have to balance ties with the US and the importance of building and maintaining a solid relationship with China. I understand this site is US centric, but do people on this site have their own insights or predictions on the Chinese leadership transition?
