To be a liberal around here? Apparently supporting Socialism and redistribution on a decent scale, supporting the minimum wage, abortion that isnt late term, labor unions, gay marriage, civil unions, medical marijuana, and also being critical of Romneys campaign isnt enough....

So let me just ask you DDO, what do I... uh, I mean.... Any person in general, have to do to be considered liberal around here?

Don't worry about what others say, or how they label you. Somehow, I got labeled a liberal, even though I...

support the death penalty.
oppose gay marriage.
oppose abortion (in most cases, not all).
support a border fence and tough immigration laws.
oppose the legalization of drugs.
etc

You have to stop kissing up just so the right-wingers like you. You have to actually defend what you supposedly support. You have to call anti-liberals out when they are making false accusations and unjustifiably attacking other liberals. You have to stop finding dumb excuses to attack other liberals, just so you look more moderate. You have to stop being their obsequious pet and grow a backbone.

You got labeled a "left-winger" by me, because you are in fact socially authoritarian. I'm not sure who it was that called you liberal

Ike Ive never had a dumb reason to attack you, you perfectly justify me attacking you. For example your consistant use of petty insults to try to make a point or win an argument is almost the only language you speak anymore

lmao you're not even using the phrase correctly. You say "case in point" when the speaker's response instantiates your original claim. Since your original point was a gross mischaracterization of my criteria for someone to be liberal, and my response was that your argument was a strawman, it doesn't logically follow that it was a "case in point" since case presented had nothing to do with your point...

In my economics class we learned how economic policies are payed out. At the very right is free market capitalism and at the very left is socialism. The US is not either of them, but is more right. If our economic policies are more left, then we move left on the lines and are thus becoming more socialist. So yes, liberals are socialists.

That's kind of a petty insult. They support more socialism, but are not de facto Socialists. They support a mixed economy.

So let me just ask you DDO, what do I... uh, I mean.... Any person in general, have to do to be considered liberal around here?

To fully answer your question:

think of Obama, Democrats, liberals, and liberalism as "on your team" and Mitt Romney, Republicans, conservatives, and conservatism as on "the other team." Criticize the other team more than you criticize your team. Praise/defend your team more than you praise/defend the other team. Give your team the benefit of the doubt, but assume that the other team always has malicious intent until otherwise proven. But your team's intentions are never malicious, and always somehow more legitimate than the other team's intentions.

In other words, stop being honest and reasonable and start being more of a thought-less team player and cheerleader for all the values associated for your team, and then most people around here will start identifying you with Obama, Democrats, liberals, liberalism, etc. The liberals will then see you as on their team. The conservatives will see you on the "other" team. The libertarians, anarchists, and various other contrarians/rebels against authority will see you as on one of a host of "other" teams, including the other team that includes valuing and associating with Mitt Romney, conservatism, the Republican party, etc.

You can think for yourself, or you can discard ideology, and stop being a team player. Everybody likes people who are intellectual/political team players, especially when you're on the same team as them (if you're not they will automatically consider you and your opinion as less legitimate than their fellow team members and their opinions)... But that doesn't mean it's right just because everyone encourages it. Arguments from popularity and/or authority are logical fallacies. I say, be yourself, because I think your ability to mostly identify with causes that happen to be called "liberal" in our society, and yet criticize causes/members of your own supposed "team", is a great reflection of character and honesty, and is a wonderful contribution to the whole DDO community.... Those who happen to frequent the politics forum, anyway.

Screw labels and team playing. Don't rely on popularity or authority to dictate what is right to think or do. Thank you and have a nice day. Unless you decide to stop being a voice of reason among the DDO liberals, in which case I'll be forced to egg your house, and would hope you have a horrible day, you traitor to the causes of reason and intellect, proponent of dumbing yourself down to be accepted by some stupid, mindless "team." But assuming you choose to be true to yourself.... Rock on, my non-partisan friend.

I wrote my response before I saw this. Had I seen this first I would not have written my response because it said everything that had to be said on this topic, which I think is what I wrote, but this puts it better. You either think for yourself, play for the team, or somewhere in between where you play with the team to an extent and think for yourself regardless of what is acceptable to the team only to an extent. One major and profound question of politics is: How much should you compromise your personally held beliefs/convictions in order to play successfully for, and be accepted by, the team.

Which I do and have dozen numerous times against many members on the site.

Hey, either of you, why do you guys

1. Support single payer

Ironically the reason I still support Single Payer is because of all that stuff you sent me in that PM of its benefits back when you were liberal.

2. Oppose eliminating the corporate income tax

I think its a valuable way to bring in extra money to pay for all the sh*t this country spends it on.

You can't think of conservatives and right-libertarians as simply people with different ideas. You have to think of them as the epiphony of evil! Only then can you be a liberal.

Oh jesus.. what is this grammatical atrocity? And then it's not even as if you were making a valid point in your process of assassinating the English language...It was just some hyperbolic dramatization of my point, without ever attacking the actual point itself, as it was presented. lol That's what's called a "strawman"

Case in point.

lmao you're not even using the phrase correctly. You say "case in point" when the speaker's response instantiates your original claim. Since your original point was a gross mischaracterization of my criteria for someone to be liberal, and my response was that your argument was a strawman, it doesn't logically follow that it was a "case in point" since case presented had nothing to do with your point...

Ike,

Even when some of your continual points about being grammatically/logically correct are valuable - and much of the time, I really do think they are, as I happen to think you're someone with a lot of interesting/profound ideas and viewpoints - the way you phrase them is dripping with condescension, snobbery, and arrogance. I think you know this to be true and go out your way to seem haughty like this, maybe because you think it will make people on this website think you are intelligent. (The above discussion with you and Oberherr is indeed a - dare I say it? - case in point.)

If you do think this, I really think you ought to consider the following viewpoint, which happens to be my viewpoint: More often than not, when you speak in such a manner as to so obviously try to make yourself seem intelligent and the god of all things grammar and logic, and your "opponent" seem like a complete and utter retard who can't even speak basic english, your "opponent" and most others who observe will simply think you're being an @$$hole. NOT that you're so intelligent. I see you acting this way and think you're acting both intelligent and like an @$$hole, but you should understand that for many people, it's either one of the other, and talking in this way makes them feel like because you're being an @$$hole, the logic behind your points is negated.

Tl;dr - Making your opponent feel like sh!t is not a good way to get anyone to think that you're intelligent or have a good point about something. For non-000ike readers, just apply the point of this post to all political debates/arguments, and the discussion of "being a team player" and how we all treat those on "the other team", and it will have relevance to this discussion beyond merely pointing out Ike's behavior.

In my economics class we learned how economic policies are payed out. At the very right is free market capitalism and at the very left is socialism. The US is not either of them, but is more right. If our economic policies are more left, then we move left on the lines and are thus becoming more socialist. So yes, liberals are socialists.

Ok 1) Not even close.
2) Who the hell asked are liberals socialists?

No need to ask. It's a fact that they are socialists.

It depends what definition of "socialism" you use. If you use your own made up definition, then yes. If you use the worlds generally accepted definition, then no.
