"I don't know that there are a lot of Cubans or Venezuelans, Americans who believe that," Obama said. "The truth of the matter is that my policies are so mainstream that if I had set the same policies that I had back in the 1980s, I would be considered a moderate Republican."

Many people accuse Obama of being a "socialist". But, this is not really true. All Obama wants to do is go back to Clinton Era tax rates. Compared to other developed democracies and the past history of the USA, Obama is conservative.

Compared to Europe, certainly. Compared to US history, I would not agree.
Beliefs in a nutshell:
- The Ends never justify the Means.
- Objectivity is secondary to subjectivity.
- The War on Drugs is the worst policy in the U.S.
- Most people worship technology as a religion.
- Computers will never become sentient.

Well, if we're talking pre-Goldwater (i.e. sane) republicans, then yeah. But otherwise, no. Although his foreign policy is a lot like GHWB's.

Nope, Obama is solidly to the left of all 20th century Republicans.

While the list was compiled before Obama came to power, Obama definitely is to the left of Clinton, but not as far left as Bernie Sanders. By European standards, this would be centrist. By United States standards, center-left.

Political science modeling is interesting and that particular model used in your link is one I'm sort of familiar with. I used it in a paper I wrote as a sophomore in college... so yeah... long time ago. But anyway, the point is that the lines between liberal and conservative are arbitrarily drawn, even when they are studied that extensively. The paper didn't get published... but then again undergraduate work never does. Oh well.

Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, increases in federal regulation, the stimulus bill, and the general motors bailout weren't around in the 1980s and aren't considered just going back to Clinton Era tax rates.

Fixed

If he wanted to go to those rates, I would be fine as long as the increase in taxes went to pay down debt, and not increase spending. The problem is, it seems no one wants the middle class or the poor to go back to Clinton tax rates.
My work here is, finally, done.
