I'm just curious as to how many people, out of the majority (although this site might not be a fair sample) would consider themselves libertarians, which I believe myself to be, or even how many really have any idea what it is.

For a brief explanation as to what libertarianism is, as well as the basic ideology of it, here's a short section from wikipedia.

"All forms of libertarianism support strong personal rights to life and liberty, but do not agree on the subject of private property.[8] The most commonly known formulation of libertarianism supports free market capitalism[8] by advocating a right to private property, including property in the means of production,[9] minimal government regulation of that property, minimal taxation, and rejection of the welfare state, all within the context of the rule of law.[10][11][12] Some pro-property libertarians are anarchists who call for the elimination of the state.[13] Some call the pro-property view propertarian, and some pro-property libertarians believe a "propertarian philosophy" is a weak basis for libertarian morality.[14] A number of countries worldwide have libertarian parties which run candidates for political office."

Actually, you might have found just the right place. Libertarianism and non-theists are overrepresented here at DDO. Welcome!

Libertarians? You mean those people that live on the margins of society and have "also ran" status in most elections?

Pshaw.

That's not a political stance. I used to be Libertarian also, but now I'm a Panarchist.

Depends who you are.

But, no, I was asking a serious question. What are your beliefs now, aside from the ambiguous term of "moderate"?

I'm not sure. I would say I agree completely with the libertarians about social issues, but think that we need some regulations in the economic realm.... though not as much as the liberals are advocating for.

So I think it's safe for me to put "moderate" down for the time being as I re-evaluate the evidence I've come to over the past few months.

Who needs a gun down their gullet for acts of capitalism between consenting adults and why? :P.

Fair enough! Its always fun to evaluate one's own beliefs.

If you want my opinion though, which you may or may not, you sound to me like a classical liberal. :D

Because human nature comes between everything, Ragnar.

That didn't answer who. And it didn't really answer why either, since it didn't name the aspect of human nature. (Incidentally "coming between everything" would mean that to follow that reasoning you should be a Communist, not a Moderate, which I know you're not so I know you can phrase it better than that :P).

The aspect of many people in general being idiotic and thus accidentally destructive towards others with their actions. The aspect of many people to be greedy and exploit others for the sake of their own desires. Et cetera.

If you have greed toward something and seek to exploit it, it hardly follows to be destructive :).
