Maybe some legislation that abolished the two party system.
No idea how it'd work or be written up, but as an exercise to force politicians positions on the issue.

Or pot decriminalization.

A bill that would force David Chapelle to return to television

That or an overhaul of the VA

The Two Party system is merely a result of the SMD voting system we have in place.

Are you suggesting a change to say, proportional voting?

No I'm assuming whatever is proposed get smashed, the idea is just to force politicians to come out opposing or supporting something they otherwise wouldn't.

You don't think that would simply get voted straight down party lines?

the point is to force a vote, not guess which one will likely be passed.

I'd propose it, and filibuster it if possible. I'd go until I fell over. If there is one issue that I truly care about, that I believe in, that I would fight and sacrifice for, that is it.

The biggest thing I can really think of that actually has a change of passing is pot decriminalization. The drug war is highly unpopular and destructive.

I'd propose a bill to Constitutionally Audit the entire federal government.

Check everything, every program, every position, every penny spent against the Constitution and cut anything that doesn't fit.

I like those two, ones in which it'd be interesting to see which politicians would vote against them.

Doesn't matter, it doesn't say "You Can Propose One Bill That Will Pass" ... It says you can propose a bill. That's the bill.

Yeah....

I would just think that someone, given such an opportunity, would actually like to take advantage of it and accomplish something besides short-lived entertainment.

I'd be more interested in forcing a vote than actually trying to pass anything. Obviously a hypothetical so we can't know, but I can't see congress passing much of any legislation, for any reason.

Either abolishing the EPA or withdrawing from the U.N.

I know neither would pass, but I would like to hear what Congress would say about those issues.

Reduce the maximum copyright term to 10 years after date of publishing. Reduce patent length to between 5 and 10 years. These things pay off initial expenses within those timespans, and let's be honest, life of the creator plus 70 years is as ridiculous as it is useless. What will the creator be doing with that money while being dead for 70 years? If it has something to do with their children, then have them actually contribute to society instead of getting a free ride on what might as well be welfare from their parents' estate.

I'd have to agree.

But then, like many of the proposals in this thread, it would never pass. Shortening it by a few decades may be possible. That's where it started out at.

I have two very important ideas.

A bill that legalizes all drugs (states can decide differently if they wish).

Another important idea would be to "personalize" Social Security. Workers could use their 6.2% share of the payroll tax to invest in stocks/ bonds and to save for their retirement using a personal retirement account that they control.

Not only would workers be richer, and have more retirement security, it would eliminate all of the unfunded liabilities that Social Security currently has.

Not sure how the bills are phrased but something to the effect of: "this member of congress will reject this bill"
Just to f*ck with them.
But seriously, to the people suggesting drugs and shizzle - we aren't there yet. There's not much I reckon which I want which could get passed.

A bill which makes them decide between changing the national bird to the turkey or doing something politically suicidal, like outlawing hotwings or making blind orphans dance for their disability benefits (something tells me that the average American would be more outraged by the former than the latter.)

Benjamin Franklin's noble fowl will have it's day of vindication!
"The Collectivist experiment is thoroughly suited (in appearance at least) to the Capitalist society which it proposes to replace. It works with the existing machinery of Capitalism, talks and thinks in the existing terms of Capitalism, appeals to just those appetites which Capitalism has aroused, and ridicules as fantastic and unheard-of just those things in society the memory of which Capitalism has killed among men wherever the blight of it has spread."
