I've criticized Democrats quite often, but Republicans are really bad too. I used to think that they were the lesser of two levels (hence my support of Mccain in 2008) but I long ago abandoned that.

Rhetorically, Republicans are marginally better. But, in practice, they are no different.

In the past few years, Republicans have once again started claiming to be the party of small government. But, let us not forget what happened right before Barack Obama was elected.

George W Bush.

This was the same George Bush who: ran massive budget deficits, created a new health care entitlement, started two expensive and pointless wars without cutting spending elsewhere, proposed amnesty for illegals, and practiced some of the most egregious corporate socialism through his bailouts near the end. Let us not forget to mention the absolute and utter disregard for our civil liberties.

Now, when Obama gets elected, Republicans expect us to believe they are really committed to small government. How do they do this?

Well, their 2012 nominee was a full out Bush apologist who pioneered a health care model similar to Obamacare. He also supported the wars, bailout (of banking), and patriot act. Granted, Romney was slightly better than Bush on, for instance, the auto bailout and immigration, but just slightly.

Republicans may want us to believe they are fans of small government who are truly shocked by the NSA invasions of privacy. But, they aren't.

Don't forget. Republicans pioneered invasions of privacy in the name of "security", bailouts to save politically connected industries, budget deficits, amnesty, Obamacare, huge spending projects, and, oh ya, I forgot to mention Bush's protectionism.

Sure, Obama has done even worse on all of these things. But, I just hope we aren't deluding ourselves into believing that Repubs are different.

Not necessarily.
"The solution [for Republicans] is to admit that Bush was a bad president, stop this racist homophobic stuff, stop trying to give most of the tax cuts to the rich, propose a real alternative to Obamacare that actually works, and propose smart free market solutions to our economic problems." - Distraff

The Republican party has always been split between Conservatives/Libertarians and Neo-Cons.

You have the Barry Goldwaters, Ronald Reagans, Ron Pauls, Pat Buchanans, Sarah Palins, Rand Pauls, Ted Cruz.

And then you have the Nixons, Bushes, Cheneys, McCains, and Grahams.

Then you have the Conservatives who are somewhat moderate. Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, etc.

Romney was a Conservative?
