DRONE STRIKES on US CITIZENS... Political Essay

Questions about President Obama's right to use drones against US Citizens have been all over the internet. To answer whether or not these rumors are true, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. wrote to Rand Paul saying Yes.

As Holder says, while it's not likely to happen, if the situation arises, President Obama could use drones. In another letter, he wrote that Obama could not use weaponized drones against US citizens not engaged in combat on US soil.

The topic doesn't quite end there. The definition of an "American not engaged in combat on American soil" isn't very clear. A document from the Justice Department claims that evidence is not needed for someone not in the US.

Cases when this becomes an issue include the Fall of 2011, when 3 US citizens, including 16 year old Abdulrahman, were killed abroad by US drone strikes. The other two victims were Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. Al-Awlaki was the father of the 16 year old victim, and only had ties to an extremist magazine called "Inspired." The only known reasoning behind killing the son was who his father was.

All three were US citizen's not given a trail. A 16 page memo from the Justice Department reveals the cases in which US citizens can be killed without a trail of any kind. Including being abroad.

"I would suggest that you should have a far more responsible father if they are truly concerned about the well-being of their children," said former White House spokesperson Robert Gibbs in October.

Rand Paul says it best in his quote, "Al-Awlaki was born here, he is an American citizen. He was never tried or charged for any crimes. No one knows if he killed anybody... But if the American people accept this blindly and casually that we now have an accepted practice of the president assassinating people who he thinks are bad guys, I think it's sad." The case only strengthen with Abdulrahman.

The Obama Administration has been relatively quiet about the case.

Politicians: The Honest Truth.

As uniting as it may be to use Politicians history of lying to gain support, it's not very accurate.

Surveys over the past few decades show that Presidents have a habit of keeping over 75% of pre-election promises. That's more faithful than most marriages.

Politifact shows President Obama has tried to keep around 70% while the GOP has tried to keep 68%. With this in mind, we should understand the difference being being an Honest President, and being a Good President. We need to remember that many promises from the GOP can't get past the Presidential Veto, which will be brought up in the next paragraph.

So how good is a 75% average among politicians? Pretty good, since many promises the Politicians try to keep get Vetoed or don't make it past Congress. This means that the politicians are trying to keep more than 75% of their promises, but isn't always successful. Politician's try to keep at least 80% of their promises, even if they don't always manager to get something past. This is far from the stereotype we expect to see.
