The massive deterioration of the main political parties has opened up a window for the Japanese Communist Party to clinch enough seats to start proposing legislation, and now that they have a large enough following to start qualifying to campaign and advertise for their party.

I doubt theyll ever get a majority of seats, but its still fun to ponder what would happen if they did go communist (or at least partly-communist) and how it would effect the world.

Eh, if that's what the Japanese people elect, so be it.

I doubt they would go full commune. Though they may start getting more communist leaning policies, as bill makers need to pander for votes.

Although, interestingly, if Communism did take the lead in Japan, it would be the first time doing so in an already industrialized country, which is what Marx envisioned.

Japan has strong democratic ideals, which are not likely to be abandoned.

In fact, according to the Japanese Communist Party website, (http://www.jcp.or.jp...) the party seems to be dedicated to democracy, as well.

The website eventually makes this clear. Like anarchists, communists are famously verbose.

A better look is available via the omnipresent Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org...

None of this is likely to matter. I am not even certain if these are "those" communists. However, a democratic, not totalitarian example of communist policies would be more than interesting to see.

(The USSR and China were never 'communist;' China is today a fascist corporate/state government, and the Soviet Republic was never anything but a dictatorship. The only honest example of communism may be found in Cuba. I am not aware of many other examples, except the weird Vietnamese.)

I smell No True Scotsman.

It isn't a NTS fallacy; I am pointing out how rare the attempt at 'democratic communism' might be. In my view, the combination is made more rare by the low number of communist attempts in the first place.

This should be considered another failed case of communism, however, and so it won't warrant much thought. If this minor Japanese political party finds some success, I will be interested in seeing how it plays out.

It would be sort of good in a way. I mean, "experimenting on a nation" doesn't sound good, but it would be interesting to see the effects it would have on the nation.

Japanese politics is funny.

Their liberal party is called the Democratic Party. And their conservative party is called the Liberal Democratic Party.

The Communist Party wiki page says they support using Capitalism.

I think that's precisely why Japan is such an anomaly.

Think of how hateful Americans still get over 9/11. Now picture the atomic bombs which were many many times worse. Yet, Japan suddenly turned away from it's traditional culture and rapidly became westernized. Imagine Americans converting to Arab culture following 9/11.

Japan completely humbled itself. Swore never to engage in war again. Maybe it's an honor thing.

Japan has the highest income equality of any country in the world and it's the only country with more women entrepreneurs than men.

They come out with the most absurd entertainment imaginable.

Japan is simply an anomaly. Something weird happened and I don't think it can ever be repeated. But the bombs probably have something to do with it.

Nah, America is actually the anomaly. The entire rest of the world is actually rather socialist, it being so compact and so they've more reason to worry about hostile neighbours. America, on the other hand, has its own space in the world and so advanced as it is, doesn't care one bit about anyone else. You guys, like the lunatic Muslims, have a pretty huge god complex, and what's going on between the two of you is pretty much a clash of the titans, neither side to be humbled anytime soon, I'd say.

Americans let idiots into power. Hey guise guess what the JCP and Obama have in common? Both share the same slogan: FOWARD.

Wonderful that you noted all of that. It adds just the right element of tragic farce to the political structure of the Japanese.

I envy them from America... with our congress. And my Texas governor.
