Yes! We're almost there! California is taking a stand and proposing to officially legalize marijuana for recreational use. The "Tax, Regulate and Control Cannabis Act of 2010" has garnered 680,000 signatures -- more than the 433,971 required to be placed on the state's ballot. It would allow adults 21 and older to possess an ounce of marijuana and cultivate 25 square feet for personal consumption. A Field Poll conducted in April showed that 56 percent of registered voters in California supported legalizing and taxing marijuana. Best of all (for them), if this bill is passed, it will draw in 1.34 BILLION DOLLARS to add to California revenue. Now, while I don't think that taxing pot is the ideal option, I think it's the best one (it will encourage the bill's passing so it's worth it). People are buying and consuming pot constantly anyway; at least this way the money is going to the state instead of Mexican drug cartels. And, of course, it's essentially harmless -- and certainly no more harmful than alcohol (obviously). California ftw.

This is great news. We'll be able to use California as a model for comparison for future advancements.

Other places should try to follow this example as marijuana has medical uses. It really helps alot of people with disabilities such as epilipsy.

They've already legalized marijuana for medical use (awhile ago). This is important because it's about personal freedoms (recreational use) and finding ways to expand and grow the economy in a realistic and and reasonable way.

I don't really know much about cigarettes, but I assume they're taxed when you buy them. I'm focusing on how they're gonna tax marijuana you grow in your backyard.

Maybe the seeds, but I can't see how they could tax something you already own.

Unless they're gonna make you get some kind of license or permit to be able to grow it.

Says it in the article: If you wish to grow, you get to plant up to 25 square feet on your property and pay a tax for your plants.

Most taxes are taxes on things people already own.

Only God knows how much we need the money.

If it will help me stop being furloughed from my job so friggin' much (yay state workers!) I'm all for it.

Essentially it's the same as any plant (the idea of growing your own). Anyone can grow their own garden and have their own tomatoes, watermelons, whatever, but 99% of people are too lazy or don't have a green thumb and would rather just drive over to the local shop and get some. Plus, having plants of any kind is a responsibility.

How will the state of California be spending the money?
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.

It'll probably just help to balance the budget. They have a huge deficit because of their ridiculous entitlement system.

I would imagine they're gonna use it to try to plug their big budget deficits without cutting a lot of spending.

So, in other words, it will be reinforcing the entitlement system.

Well I know there'll be higher taxes, and I know that tax revenue from this marijuana law will reinforce whatever Calif gov is already screwing up on, but what exactly does "entitlement system" refer to? Or is it just a term to refer to the aggregate of the welfare state and other social services?

Also, I don't see how it's reinforcing it... Maybe fixing the problem? Maybe this is a reality check? Also, if the drug cartels become more powerful, that just means more illegal immigrants (less jobs for Americans and higher taxes) + more government corruption.

Right. Because drug cartels don't correspond to government corruption at all.

Corrupt= easier to get people riled up about. It's the honest welfare states that do the most harm, for they are the most entrenched. To "corrupt" a government is to weaken it.

What is this "entitlement system" referring to?
Public education, health care programs, welfare, that sort of thing.
It came to be at its height. It was commanded to command. It was a capital before its first stone was laid. It was a monument to the spirit of man.
