The US has had about 6 distinct political party systems. Some of these occurred due to changes in how parties were run and others occurred due to the appearance of one or more powerful third parties.

Currently, the percentage of Americans who support the appearance of a new major party has reached an all-time high since the poll has been kept. 60% as a whole and 71% among Independents, according to Gallup.

Could this mark the beginning of a new paradigm?

Probably not

Whenever a new party has potential it just ends up getting absorbed by one of the two main parties changing its stance on specific issues...... Plus there arent even any remotely strong third parties out there right now.... Even the Libertarian party couldnt muster 1.5 million votes in an election of over 120 million (Meaning they got only about 1% of the vote in their most successful campaign yet)

First-past-the-post voting largely precludes the possibility of a legitimate third party, so I don't see it happening even if there were sustained support for one.

I also think it's unlikely. But I find it very likely the Republican party will either reinvent itself or be pushed out of the game for a time.

I certainly hope so, Freedo. At least until the party system can be abolished and it switches to a purely candidate based system. I like making people actually think about who they are voting for.

^ THAT I agree with

though tbh I dont really remember a single instance where the Republican Party really reinvented itself to appeal to independents and moderates, so the second one seems more likely to me
