I say no, but if you respect people's rights, you don't need to resort to death threats, rape threats and such. Death threats and rape threats are just so wrong to be used for political gain. If you are secure in your beliefs, you don't need to do this. Death and rape threats are also illegal in many countries for the right reasons. There is a credible threat of criminal activity when death or rape threats are made, so this is a big problem. What are your thoughts on this?
So you wanna know all about Sitara, huh? Knowledge is power, and you want knowledge of me? With great power comes great responsibility, so I hope you understand what you're getting yourself into. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Most death threats are anonymous.

So threatening someone's life is okay if no one knows who you are?

No, and they are not. It is a criminal act that can be prosecuted in each state in the US. It is called "Terroristic Threats". Having said that, specific requirements/elements of the law (Mens Rea) need to be met in order for it to be consider a crime. If I threaten to kill say someone I don't even know like John Doe who lived in Australia with a water balloon while residing in Wichita, KS. It would be difficult for a prosecutor to find me guilty because it was not a reasonable threat. Who is John Doe and is a John Doe in immediate danger considering I am on the other side of the world and do not have the means to do it. This of course is a hypothetical to prove a point. If on the other hand I said I was going to kill my teacher or boss with a gun. This is very much against the law and can be prosecuted because I have the means and opportunity to do so. If my teacher or boss feels in danger resulting from this threat. Mens Rea is met in msny states and can be prosecuted.

I think most people would agree that, as long as the threat is not believed to be serious, it should be illegal, since your actions are negatively affecting another, a psychological assault if you will.

The defense for the threatener would be whether or not the threat ought to have been taken seriously.

An anonymous letter to a public official has no reason to not be taken seriously.
A friend saying to another "I'll kill you" after being a victim of a prank should not.

Like harassment, it is largely up to the recipient of the threat to establish the believability, though.
My work here is, finally, done.

Most death threats are anonymous.

No, rather the fact that they tend to be anonymous equate to several things:

1) They are generally shunned and are considered shameful
2) They are generally illegal
3) They are generally exceptionally difficult to prosecute, since typically the offender is unknown.
