Funny how literally no Republicans actually talk this. But, I guess its easier to caricature than deal with opposing arguments.

A local gun store thingy in my town has weaved the "'Bama comin 4 ouw guuuuns!" rhetoric permanently into their advertisements with lines like "Come and get 'em before they take 'em". It's been six goddamn years of it.

I should clarify: a vast majority of Republicans don't talk like this. I can find nutty Democrats that say Bush was Adolf Hitler...

Whether a vast majority of republicans talk like that and whether you can find all kinds of nutty democrats (one of them is currently the Vice President) is meaningless.

There are still a whole lot of stupid Republicans.

The very fact that you insist on making a comparison between of republicans and democrats tells me that in at least some cases disagreement with your particular opinion is the metric by which you delineate the stupid, from the not stupid. That's not a becoming quality, Dave.

Not at all. Smart people can have differing opinions. However, as a wise man once said, you are not entitled to your own facts.

Progressives hold on to many unscientific views on issues like the minimum wage (where the evidence and logic are overwhelmingly in opposition to the progressive orthodoxy). At the same time, they hypocritically accuse Repubs of being unscientific.

If you believe Republicans don't talk like that, you're not reading any of the comments, posted by conservatives, on most of the political news articles.

I actually am a conservative who knows a lot of conservatives. None of them talk like that.

Now, if you get all your info from left wing sources who caricature conservatives, I can see why you are misinformed about this.

I agree with you that there are left-wing loonies who paint dumb, factually inaccurate pictures of conservatives -- you even had some very good points about how the salon article I linked to (not as a source, for the record, but as a topic of discussion) confused libertarians with conservatives. But would you not agree that Fox News has made it a profession to caricature Obama and, in many cases, lie about his record? He's not perfect, but he's hardly a socialist. Moreover, giving a platform to Jesse Lee Peterson -- who asserted that Obama is essentially one degree of separation from the anti-christ -- or Trump or Palin -- the first of whom is a birther, the latter of whom is practically a birther -- is simply in bad taste.

Now, we can debate whether the right wing loons or left wing loons are greater in number or greater in stupidity. But, Id just rather not give them attention.

It is an exaggeration. But, is it any more nutty than saying Republicans want to end Medicare?

Dems said that a lot and it was totally untrue. Repubs did want to reform Medicare, but certainly not end it. Likewise, Obama wants to increase gun control but not takeaway everyones guns.

Even worse, I don't hear leading Republicans say he wants to take away everyone's guns, but leading dems did push the Medicare lie.

I think it depends largely on the MSNBC host. I'm not sure if you saw the segment that Alex Wagner had with Ron Paul over Syria (I'll see if I can find the video). I wouldn't say that she painted a false image, but she went full ObamaBot in defending the strike, and Ron essentially ripped her. I don't think we can really compare that to the "global cooling" or "War on Christmas" nonsense on Fox.

I actually agree with everything you're saying. But, I also feel I need to point out that MSNBC is quite dishonest too in a liberal direction. And, there are plenty of liberal loons.

Now, we can debate whether the right wing loons or left wing loons are greater in number or greater in stupidity. But, Id just rather not give them attention.

I'm not referring to that incident.

Economics is my expertise and MSNBC is unrivaled in economic illiteracy. Fox gets a lot of facts wrong and creates a lot of false controversy, but I get much more annoyed when someone on MSNBC claims untrue things about the minimum wage or the effect of taxation on economic growth (which they do quite often).

Fox is worse about a lot of things, but they are probably the most economically literate network on TV (excluding Kudlow), which isn't saying much.

Ah, ok. Well, that's something that we obviously disagree on quite a bit. I'm talking mainly about objective reporting and, on that, I think Fox is likely the most disingenuous.

Smart people can agree on economic policy issues. However, MSNBC misrepresents economics in a way to push their economic agenda and that strikes me as at least as bad as what Fox does.

Don't you think Fox News does that, too? Fox pushed pretty hard for Mittens in 2012 for instance. I bet we could even agree that the interviews Hannity gave to Ron Paul -- or even the debate questions Bret Baier and others gave to Ron (e.g., are you to the left of Obama on foreign policy? -- were wildly loaded.

But I thought you were talking about pushing an agenda. As you said, we can have a reasonable disagreement about economics -- and I admit that some of our past debates have been quite contentious -- but I don't think MSNBC is the more agenda-based organization.
