A porn star enters politics. People wag fingers at her character and intellect and ability.

Is this sexism or normal politics at work?

SOP for politics.
Hell, just being rich, or black, or Catholic, or suffering from depression, or any other host of ad hominum can gain or lose votes.
My work here is, finally, done.

Yeah, but if we lose votes for being black, for example- that'd still be racism in politics.

I'm actually not sure about this. On one hand, even if there was a male prostitute- for example, he'd suffer the end of the backlash too, so it isn't female specific. But the justification- that a sexually active woman can't have enough brainpower/ capability/ moral persuation to run a state screams sexism to me.

Is it, though?
Is gaining them equally racist?
I guess it depends on the definition of -ism.

Well, it may be sexism, as I am not sure if males would be as frowned upon (look at sexual scandals), but, if being a porn star suggest one lacks X quality, is it really sexist?

Yeah it is. In the ideal world, your skin colour shouldn't interfere with the world's perception of what you have to offer in the political arena.

Well, sexism is enforcement of gender roles. (that's the most practical definition I've read). The idea that a woman cashing in on her sexual appeal is somehow less capable of serving the area because she has compromised with her morals can be construed as sexist

Didn't Bill Clinton- lewinsky scandal lead to his impeachment?

I mean, if we look at it from the POV of gender roles- because a female is not being a 'good' woman, she lacks the qualities needed for being a good leader, even though I can't see a direct link. I guess yeah, that'd be sexism.

Depends on the definition.

What definition?

I don't think that would be sexism as much as it would be a surface mainstream dislike/stigma of a community. Whether a man or woman the person would likely get some flack.

With no other information than the above, yes, I would find such a characterization not only normal politics but "proper" politics.

1) The qualities required for being a porn star typically do not require intellect or intellectual ability.
2) "Character" depends upon a society, although most would consider sexual promiscuity to be an anathema to a healthy marriage...and most of society is indeed married.
3) This porn star could have easily been male and would have been accosted in a similar manner, so I don't see sexism.

If by sexist, you're referring to how porn involves sex, then yea, but if by sexist, you're referring to the porn star's femininity, then no.

Then and again, a career built around drilling down to animalistic urges indeed lacks character, intellect, and ability.

On the other hand, it's a personal attack. The politician should be judged on the merit of one's ideological platform, not on one's personal experiences. People can be weirdly successful after all and come up with unexpected good ideas.
