BTW. I've never been a Republican, but I used to support the party. I used to be a liberal at one point too.

I eventually wised up and became a libertarian.

Just read the article, lol. Libertarians want complete social and economic freedom from government, but also want protection and services. We might as well abolish education, international trade commerce, and all federal bureaucracies. Oh wait, they already do? They wonder why no one takes them seriously.

Well, the article is obviously a massive strawman but it's funny nonetheless. I don't think the things you brought up are very effective criticisms...as a (mostly formerly) libertarian there's nothing more annoying than being dismissed out of hand due to status quo bias. "What? We can't abolish X! You just...can't!" The way to convince libertarians is to show why their ideas are wrong, not try to make appeals to emotion or to the status quo.

Libertarianism is a very logic derived, "cold hearted" so to speak ideology. If you want to actually convince them they're wrong you're gonna have to get into the nitty gritty logical arguments. That's why things like that article are really funny, but libertarians would just scoff at it as an obvious strawman. Your arguments, too, wouldn't be very convincing to a libertarian.

I wasn't really trying to convince anyone there. Just pointing out how hilarious their arguments are. Believe me, I spend most of my time on this site debating libertarians. People are pretty slow to change their views though, or become so close minded about them.

I can agree with you, but not ALL republicans stink. Abraham Lincoln was Republican, and was he bad? Eisenhower, and Reagan were too, and they weren't bad.

Reagan was pretty horrible to be honest. Lincoln was a Republican back when they were closer to the left, at least regarding social issues.

Boring.

Ten Reasons to Hate Republicans:

1. They like Democracy

Is that why they passed voter ID laws which disproportionately affect minorities who vote Democrat even though instances of voter fraud are less common than a shark attack? Is that why the support Citizens United et al. which led to an influx of money into politics and obstructs democracy? Is that why they filibustered a gun control bill that over 90% of the country supported?

2. Closet Liberals

Absolutely ridiculous.

3. The Love Liberty

Nope, not even close, hence why they love the NSA, love drones, want to allow private businesses to discriminate against gay people -- thus depriving them of their freedom -- want to outlaw abortion, many want to allow the states to ban contraception, almost all of them are opposed to gay marriage and civil unions, and I could go on.

4. They love the rights of the American people

Nope -- see opposition to gay rights, opposition to reproductive rights, voter ID laws, etc.

5. They can talk, but not act

Somewhat true.

6. They don't spend a lot

Ha! This is the dumbest one on your list. The deficit is theirs, my friend, because Bush blew away a $200 billion surplus on two rounds of tax cuts, two wars, a prescription drug program, defense contracts, and a recession.

AND, these are the guys who wasted $24 billion shutting down the government complaining about a law that decreases the federal deficit.

7. They don't send soldiers to other countries

Iraq, Afghanistan, Grenada.........are you for real with this one?

8. They want the American people to be unhealthy

I think you meant to say "healthy," but neither of these are true, verifiable, or even relevant.

9. They don't want money :(

Ummmmm, not true at all?

10. They're Republicans! What else can I say?

You could say that you have no idea what you're talking about. That's a start.

We (libertarians) want either no state or minimalist state. That means a state that either doesn't exist or only exists to enforce contracts and protect rights. Pretty simple.

Ya. Libertarians are hilarious. They use those damn facts and logic. The progressive and right wing appeals to emotion and straw men are so much less hilarious and so much more convincing.

Two good threads to illustrate the American mindset of hating each other for their politics. Maybe it's time to go get your guns outHmmmm?
