Politics is the art of governing. It is the process and the field by which individuals come together to make decisions which are designed to manage a community, group, or organization.

What is the purpose of politics?

The purpose is simple; the standard idea out there is that a community or organization needs some form of governance, of decision-making, of leadership, of authority. Individuals come together with other individuals to manage the community and its resources, to handle relations with other communities and within the community, and so on. Without this, there would be anarchy, literally, since anarchy is the idea of the absence of this authority and this process.

This works on a scale of a country, of a corporation, of a community group, of a tribe - whatever. Politics is the art of governance.

I've been led to believe they are small blood sucking parasites that infect parrots.
I am voting for Innomen because of his intelligence, common sense, humility and the fact that Juggle appears to listen to him. Any other Presidential style would have a large sub-section of the site up in arms. If I was President I would destroy the site though elitism, others would let it run riot. Innomen represents a middle way that works, neither draconian nor anarchic and that is the only way things can work. Plus he does it all without ego trips.

If dictatorships engage in a process by which groups of people mke collective decisions, then dictatorships engage in politics.

So in an anarchist society, you'd have no need whatsoever for the process of politics? That means corporations couldn't exist. That means zero communities could exist. Essentially, anything that makes us human - our social communities, our trading schemes, etc. - could not exist, not without the process of politics.

This reminds me of one of the really heated debates I had with my ex about faith. She's Catholic, I'm Atheist. I was saying I have faith in nothing, and she pretty much went nuts. It made no sense to her how I could not have faith in myself, in the world, in her, in etc. etc. etc.

Kind of like how it makes no sense to you how I say politics shouldn't exist. Or at least, that's if I give you the benefit of the doubt. You're probably just attempting to straw man me, as is your usual MO.

Clearly, we have differing definitions.

My ex put trust as a subset of faith. I don't.
I define faith as that which has to do with the suspension of disbelief for the supernatural, usually for the omnipotent deities and rules of organized religion.

You put negotiations as a subset of politics. I don't.
I define politics as the subset of negotiation required to run a state.

Negotiation for lack of a better term. Includes both individual and group communications.

A state, of course, being the business which has the legal and moral monopoly over the initiation of use of force over a certain geographical area.

So in other words, you define "politics" as the process within the state, but not outside.

That's a fuzzy definition, but fair enough.

I believe there is a substantial difference in the incentive structure when there is a legal and moral monopoly on the initiation of use of force, one that is substantial enough to separate a whole category of <negotiations> just to describe it.
