So, the Miami region just voted to secede from Florida and become the nations 51st state. Discuss.

They didn't "vote" to secede - their city council narrowly voted for it. Given how strongly Democratic South Florida is, and how it comprises about 5 million of Florida's 19 million citizens, it would be electoral suicide for Democrats to let it leave (the rest of Florida would be strongly red and would have much more electoral votes than blue South Florida), and so it won't happen.

I anticipate Puerto Rico will, at some point, be admitted as the 51st state. There will probably some push to create a red-leaning state to counterbalance it, but I think it can happen without any compromise. Both parties seem to support it.

I amend this. It seems like they've overplayed their card and asked for 67% of Florida's population (13,375,000 people). That is moronic and will never happen - Republicans will not split up a mildly Republican swing state to give Democrats 18 free electoral votes. I'm going to crunch the numbers and see how lopsided it would be

What about the whole thing with California being split up into six different states. Could that actually happen?

OK, after calculating everything South Florida would have given Obama its 18 electoral votes, with 3,001,556 votes (54% of two-party vote) for Obama and Romney 2,556,402 votes (46% of two-party vote). That's fairly similar to the two party vote of Wisconsin, a slightly blue swing state. So the state would be light blue, but winnable for Republicans.

The rest of Florida, with 11 electoral votes, would have given Romney 1,605,679 votes (56% of the vote), and Obama 1,233,714 votes (44% of the vote). That's fairly similar to the two party vote of Indiana, which is not a swing state.

So overall, this isn't that bad of a proposal. I wouldn't support it, but it's not that bad. The problem is only 8 of the 24 counties in 'South Florida' lean Democratic (which means they won't want to join), and very few Republicans are going to support it.

No. That failed to get ballot access.

I think the best secessionists can ask for is for California to break up into two states (and I don't see this happening anytime soon); expecting it to break up into six different states is a wild acid trip. That's simply not going to happen.

I would be on board for that. Perhaps a split into NorCal (plus LA) and SoCal?

Lol, why would it be norcal plus LA?

LA is emblematically SoCal. We wouldn't want them anyway? :P

Because Southern California is already dominated by the cities. They'd just change from being dominated by NorCal cities to being dominated by LA, which has just as dismissive an attitude towards their issues as NorCal does.
