I was curious to see what other countries thought about guns in politics, such as can a civilian own a gun, can he carry it to defend himself? Is there a limit on what kind of gun he can own? Should there be background checks? Could police carry them?

UK Yes for limited purposes and has to have a license and must keep it locked away when not in use. Most uses are sport related but culling and pest control is also allowed if the person is trained.

can he carry it to defend himself?

No. We have the police for that. Untrained civilians firing at random will lead to innocent victims. It is unlikely that a gun will help against attack anyway. Attackers don't usually give the victim a chance to defend themselves. The result is that the attacker now has a gun after he has assaulted you by surprise.

Is there a limit on what kind of gun he can own?

Of course. Sport guns are limited calibre rifles or shotguns. Rifles for culling are more powerful but high levels of training are needed with frequent retesting.

Should there be background checks?

Of course.

Could police carry them?

Only properly trained officers. Any fire arms officer using their weapon is automatically on report and must show that they had justification for using it. Each bullet fired must be accounted for.
