This guy has some good points. Whether we choose to act or not, capitalism WILL fail once peak oil hits, in my opinion, because localized economies are going to need something more efficient and equitable once the transportation of goods becomes exponentially more expensive.

If only we had a system that actually ran on capitalism. THEN we could put his arguments to the test.

His arguments are based on zero capitalism. In particular, not selling human labor as a commodity and destroying the notion of currency. Your welcome to watch the video before you post on it you know :)

Couldn't the same be said about socialism? There have been no "purely" capitalistic countries or socialist ones.

So is it supposed to last forever Nags? At what point should we become concerned that oil is running out?

Never. Forget that we've used around half of the world's supply of oil. Screw that. We'll have enough oil for ourselves, and that's all that matters. It will be the problem of future generations, just like global warming. We'll take advantage now and enjoy the misery of our children later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Makes me laugh. An "incentive" system not based on self-interest.

Don't worry Rob, there are entrepreneurs (capitalists) developing alternative technology and energy as we speak. Did crude oil used as energy come about because of government intervention, regulations, laws, and subsidies? Or did it come about because of the entrepreneurial spirit?

If you bothered to read the article...

I wish he wouldn't equate a mixed economy with capitalism. He keeps talking about all of this corruption, monopolizing, legislative favors, and so forth, and then fails to explain that a free-market economy is absolutely devoid of government action.

Also, I wish he would stop talking collectively: "humanity" this, "society as a whole" that. Bleh.

Bleh. Screw humanity and society. We need to go back to Hoover's concept of rugged individualism; that worked out so well the first time.

I may be under the partial influence of alcohol, but I couldn't help but find the linked article's author amusing.

Peak oil exists. I state this as the attentive grandson of a career geologist who says it exists. Whether it'll occur any time soon is doubtful. Whether it'll occur in this century is stretching it, but eventually, the world will run out of oil. There is no doubt about this.

How it affects capitalism, the article's author really didn't connect anything to. It existed before oil, and it'll work after oil. There's nothing more to really say. His assertions just don't make sense.

Don't worry Rob, there are entrepreneurs (capitalists) developing alternative technology and energy as we speak.

What... Fuel cells? Compressed air? Battery? Biofuels? They all have serious drawbacks, and none of the theoretical replacements will give us what gas can.

Did crude oil used as energy come about because of government intervention, regulations, laws, and subsidies? Or did it come about because of the entrepreneurial spirit?

You guys really sound... Sort of religious when you say this. As if oil wouldn't have been discovered by 2010 because capitalism, based on greed, never existed. I'm sure we'd all be using horse and buggy still, right? Oh wait, entrepreneurs made those too... I say we would have had much MORE from a system of cooperation instead of competition, because competitiors don't pool knowledge.

nags: unless you think the worlds oil resources are infinite or that we will kill ourselves off within the next century or so peak oil exists. its a necessary consequence of the fact that oil stores are not unlimited.

ok i guess technically also we could engineer microbes to produce oil, that would stave off the peak oil thing too.... i mean we've already done it, but we'd have to make it a lot more efficient for it to be viable...

but anyways- barring anything completely unexpected peak oil is real. the mises link you posted doesn't really refute it either. the guy talks about a tangental point, namely the "crisis" that is supposedly coming when we get there. i only skimmed because i am impatient like that, but he seemed to be implying that a replacement for oil, if it became necessary, would arise naturally without too much strife. not without effort of course, but certainly without global catastrophe. and i generally agree with that, i don't really think that there is a crisis. but to say that "peak oil" is fake is like saying THERES NO SUCH THING AS GLOBAL WARMING even when all the data clearly points to warmer average temperatures across the globe. if you want to argue that humans aren't causing it (doubtful, but meh) or that its being horrendously catastrophized by the media (absolutely) thats a separate thing, but to say its not real is just wrong.
evidently i only come to ddo to avoid doing homework...

Yeah a guy who has dedicated his life to the study of the ground says oil is running out... We better shun him and go back to heritage.org where the impartial experts are for our answers instead. What's the % consensus of peak oil in the scientific community? Oil is a finite resource and it is running out. There is no serious challenge to this assertion outside of conservative think tanks and their believers.
