Wasn't there some treaty made that all the countries of the world agreed not to lay claim to Antarctica and use it only for research or something?

Yes, all the governments of the world agreed to shoot any libertarians who happened to be desperate enough to try the "Settle Antarctica" plan, unless they agree to a socialist regime in which it is impossible to live without government employment as a scientist :P.

Treaties are irrelevent. If they ever find anything useful in Antarctica, the United States will take it. If too many liberals end up moving there, it will remain a territory and not a state so that Republicans don't lose power, just like the rest of our non-state territories.

The population is mostly government-employed "scientists". Most of the rest are Greenpeace "scientists". That's not an "if."

note: I linked to that article merely to note there is stuff to be found. Their opinions of its economic viability notwithstanding.

Check out Raytheon Polar Services. There are some major defense contractors working up there. Once a year they send a ship full of supplies to their people in Antartica - they have to navigate the ice melt. The largest item of demand: condoms. - client of mine (and i don't sell condoms).

Yeah Republicans have lost the Presidency and both houses of Congress. And the only reason that Guam and Puerto Rico aren't allowed to become states is because Republicans block them due to the fact that they will not vote for Republicans.

1,709,400 sq km (1,068,375 sq. miles) of Antarctica is a British Overseas Territory.

http://www.antarctica.ac.uk...

The British made the first territorial claim on the continent although the Argentineans recently made a counter claim when they heard oil had been discovered in its territorial waters. Sensibly, their claim was dismissed as speculative.
