The most laughed about country in the world told its army to "prepare for war with the US", [1], and proceeded to fire two missiles into the Sea of Japan [2]. All we know is that their planes are literally falling out of the sky [3], and they have all of their borders closed because of Ebola [4].

But, in all seriousness: this is why you don't criticize people's haircuts.

I am not sure a drunken man in a bar weilding a hand grenade it anything to laugh about. North Korea indisputably has Nuclear Weapons, the nation is volatile, and we can't even truth mutually assured destruction to work here since it only works if the opposition values not having their citizens annihilated, which is a claim I can questionably attach to N.Korea.

Even a rudimentary nuclear bomb would kill hundreds of thousands of people (set one off in NY City...), and advanced deployment techniques are not required to accomplish that, a truck with enough space inside will do.

N.Korea is no joke.... That grenade in that man's hand is live... And he doesn't really care about his own well-being.

I think there is a real temptation to look at North Korea and think about how manifestly ridiculous Kim Jong Un is, etc. He is. No one really is reasonably questioning that.

But, as Envisage pointed out, North Korea can do real damage. I don't think they will, because NK knows that if they attacked South Korea, the US would declare war on NK and China would *not* come to NK's aid.

So, what's really going on here is political posturing... and that's it. Un is not going to declare war. He's not going to do anything that might make China remind NK of its place. He knows where the line is, and he's not going to cross it.

Of course not. That's why nobody should be afraid of the guy. He can play with missiles in a showing of power that he knows he can't use all he wants. There's no way someone could be so misled that they could defeat the US and it's allies in a war with 50 year old equipment from the Soviet Union.

N Korea is only laughable because they back off from what they say they are going to do. They have the ability to do it but don't dare try.

The only missile N korea has that could hit the continental US is untested. http://www.cnn.com...

But this is typical N Korean rhetoric. This sabre rattling sounds more atune to ringing the tin cup against the bars asking for more food. These people are not crazy, they don't want to lose power.

They are crazy enough to starve a massive chunk of their population, they don't particularly care what happened to themselves, people are disposable to them. That's why MAD can't necessarily be trusted to work like it did with the Societs.

Are they planning on smuggling a nuke into the US? And who are they even going to nuke? The moment they hit anyone they lose all support, even from China. Again you call the regime crazy. This is unfounded. You assume just because they don't care about their people they are crazy, but no. They care about staying in power, if this requires starvation, labor camps and nuclear threats they will do it. However, the moment they actually declare war or commit an act of war they know they will be disposed of. That is why they, the regime, are all talk and no action. To assume insanity is to play into their hand. They may have a grenade, but they are only acting drunk for more concessions, as they have done for past decades.
