Chris Mathews of the political talk show called "Hard Ball" Asked Debbie Wasserman Schwartz Leader of the DNC what the difference between a Democrat and a socialist was and she couldn't give a coherent answer. What do the people of DDO say the difference is?
It's not your views that divide us, it's what you think my views should be that divides us.

If you think I will give up my rights and forsake social etiquette to make you "FEEL" better you are sadly mistaken

If liberal democrats would just stop shooting people gun violence would drop by 90%

A Democrat is a socialist with no teeth.

Democrats could have shut down private industry long ago if they though they could get away with it.

Really? I cannot believe she was incapable of answering that question. In fact, I am doubting your post. Link? Even me 1st year political science 101 students could answer it when they are finished with my class. Anybody who cannot is politically ignorant.
The difference is significant. A Socialist is somebody who supports and believes in a Socialist form of Government. This is one in which there is no--or very little--free market Capitalism. No private business sector. Instead all modes of control and Government are owned and operated by the people at large, the citizenry, and their elected leaders. In the original Karl Marx view, Socialism was the imtermediary point after a people's revolution on the way to the State becoming totally Communist.

The Democratic Party in America is NOT this, obviously. They still embrace Free Market Capitalism and our Federal Republic, or representative democracy. (we're not a pure democracy). Many many Democrats own businesses. But Democrats traditionally DO want more of a "re-distribution of the Wealth" in their country than the GOP,, or obviously the wealthy. They also tend to favor a "tax and spend" government and economy, and feel the Rich should pay higher taxes. Which, BTW, they do. The GOP tend to be more in favor of Big Business than the Dems, who will sometimes hinder those businesses with Regulations and, again, more taxes.

The Democrats are actually closer to the Republicans on the political spectrum than they are to True Socialists. Obama is often unfairly said to be pursuing a Socialist agenda with his advocacy of Entitlement Programs. A very popular refrain of a true Socialist or Communist is "from each according to their ability, and to each according to their needs." While the DNC may lean to this slightly more than the GOP is true, but they still dont lean to it nearly far enough to be synonymous with Socialists.
Hope this helps.

The closest thing I have seen to socialism in the US is the Alaska Permanent Fund. Ironically, it was created under a Republican governor:

Just by the way, I think it's Schultz not Schwartz.
