I think the interstates was a good use of a lot of money. The return on commerce as a result easily justified the expense. I know there are hard core libertarians that would be against it, but i think Eisenhower doesn't get enough credit for the interstates, they really changed our country more than most people realize.

Stimulus - complete waste of time. Might as well take billions of dollars and have a gigantic bonfire.

What are the silliest reasons, you can find, where government spent money?
Going into serious danger zones of debt with the idea it will fix the economy.

Military, police and the courts.

Everything aside from the above.

To think it's for the greater good and that it's necessary they intervene.

This was definitely the worse. The interstate system has had no positive effect at all. Instead, it has caused:
-racial tension
-higher violent crime rates
-increased pollution
-the unsustainable car culture
-a more conservative, individualist society
-caused trillions of dollars in uncontrollable, inefficient spending by the government and individual car owners
-40,000 deaths a year just from car on-purposes, not including thousands of respiratory and other deaths

Actually, you can probably ascribe anything bad in America to the interstate.

Thanks to the interstate, we are on the road to ruin if we dont get our act together and start building more rail lines.

I forget the exact name of it, but there's some company in Texas that basically trains people who were either convicted of crimes (and can't find work because of it) or I guess who were just low-income or whatever and teaches them construction and other skillz like that. I'm pretty sure the State subsidizes a little bit of funding for this place. I made a thread about it a long time ago, but I dunno where it is. Basically this place is cool because it takes people who have no shot and gives them an opportunity to become functional and productive members of society. This is the best example of spending I can think of because it rewards hard work and productivity and doesn't simply give people money for no reason. It's also not that expensive from what I recall and gives people opportunities and second chances they wouldn't have had otherwise.

What is some of the worst things government spent money on?

The futile and complete failure at attempting the "War on Drugs."

Also any money spent on arresting, prosecuting and imprisoning those partaking in victimless crimes (like drugs, prostitution, etc.).

What are the silliest reasons, you can find, where government spent money?

Most of it.

I'd say the amount they pay city employees (especially themselves) or others in power. Money to unions. Worst of all... CORPORATE BAIL OUTS.

Hmm... I think in years to come Space research will be the most important thing. Not that we should give up on our own planet, but with the predicted increases in world population, we simply won't have enough room and resources.
I can't really think of anything else. In Australia, the Government seems to spend money on things that we don't really need because it's easier than doing the things that need to be done.

What is some of the worst things government spent money on?

The War on Drugs is a huge part of this. What a complete waste of money.
Basically everything from a council level, state level and country wide level seems to be wasteful.

The baby bonus seems like a moronic idea. It encouraged late-teen and early twenty something girls to have babies, not because they wanted babies, but because they wanted money any didn't want to work. GTFO.

Actually at the time it was done with amazing efficiency when compared to any road project today. Uncontrollable and inefficient spending by car owners- silly hyperbole.
-40,000 deaths a year just from car on-purposes, not including thousands of respiratory and other deaths
"on-purposes"? Accidents happen, and that is the price of this progress. Are you shooting for a no risk, no progress society?

Actually, you can probably ascribe anything bad in America to the interstate.

Completely unrealistic and inefficient for our country. We're not Europe.

Here, you choose the most worthless departments in a sea of government inefficiency. So far my vote is the National Endowment of the Arts.
