There were factors out of his control such as the incumbent being extremely unpopular, the financial meltdown, and Barack Obama being African American which put him at a disadvantage, but this is a short list of what McCain did wrong during the campaign.

1. Poor choice of running mate
To allay the criticism from the right-wing that McCain was not conservative enough, he chose Palin. Conservatives voted McCain over Obama anyway, but elections depend on the swing votes and picking Palin drew him away from the voters.

2. Focusing on the wrong issues
McCain was very fixated on issues such earmark reform and cutting waste out of government, but the economy was the biggest issue that was on people's minds and he did not put enough emphasis on it.

3. Did not emphasize the right points
McCain could have easily put large holes in Obama's arguments and inconsistencies if he stopped focusing on nitpick criticisms such as William Ayers.

Well those are all good points but in my eyes Obama just rode the wave... Democrats were just going to get votes that year no matter what because Bush was such an eyesore. We're about to see the other side of that wave in 2 months.

I don't think so on this one. People simply don't pick based on the stances of the VP but rather the stances of the presidential candidate himself. making real conservatives happier about his being the guy they know they have to vote for anyway is just a side advantage. the main reason for choosing Palin was obviously to remove Obama's advantage in being 'first' in race if we wins by having a VP that would be a 'first' in gender. And she had a history that could rhetorically be made to mesh with his 'Mavrick' campaign.

Obama theory has been claimed by many people to be based on bunk science, however. While data could be interpreted to show that Obama won, to say this change is man-made is just proposterous. Why, just the other day, it was feeling very Republican outside!

I think the Republicans bought into the "Democrats are gonna win by a landslide" hype and threw in the towel way too early.

The Republicans did not have any really strong candidates that people could believe in.

W gave the impression of being an imbecile, and left a huge mess for others to clean up.

Mr Sotero will likely be re-elected because even though he has done poorly, the Republicans still do not have any credible candidates to offer.

Vol, I have found a number of variations of the beloved President, however my point was sarcasm.

Because he was a Republican and so many ignorant voters went off and said, "Hmmm... Bush was a Republican, so they must all suck, Obama it is."

I was kind of talking about the primary voters, but you know, let's not stick to proper contexts. Nice touch calling other people except those that follow your opinion ignorant, by the way.

There's a lot of ignorant voters who voted Republican as well. I wouldn't be surprised if a significant percentage American voters don't pay attention to any of the actual issues.

I'm fairly certain that Obama was put into office by black people, hipsters and assorted college liberals eager to abuse their right to vote without much thinking involved. Nothing wrong with that, that's probably how a lot of presidents were put into office.
