He played it well, took it "reluctantly" which lowers expectations. From a pr perspective I don't think he could have played it better.extra credit for the family bit.

I agree in a sense, but it is an impossible job right now. His public perception will soon suffer.

True on both parts. The pr simply mitigates the damage.

Well, I mean he lessened the scope and demand of the job, says he did not want it, takes it out of obligation. If he even does half way decent he will be seen as some great leader. If he struggles it's just the job and at least he had the courage to take it.

I think he's a great candidate, personally. I see him and Amash as the best choices for the job. The job is practically impossible for anyone signing on, but Ryan played the situation well, ensuring that he wouldn't be too hyped.

Amash would be my first choice. The Week wrote a great article on him and his candidacy if he ran and retracted his endorsement of Ryan: http://theweek.com...

The political issues have already been stated in the above posts so I don't think I need to reiterate those.

As someone from Wisconsin, I personally think it's interesting that we'll finally have someone from here as house speaker. Otherwise the position has been dominated by Massachusetts (8 speakers), Kentucky (4) and Virginia (4).

If he brings more pork to Wisconsin, then sure, why not, more power to him.

Decent choice. Smart, qualified, and he should be reasonably effective in the routine matters of the running the House. I don't think he'll have any real impact on corralling the conservative block of Republicans. I think the appointment of a new speaker will be a non-event in terms of changing anything about the way the poorly governed, poorly run chaotic Republican Majority in the House of Representatives currently operates.

Who's he running against? Nobody in the GOP wanted the position. this desperation has allowed Paul Ryan to write his own ticket.
Is this a reflection of the state of the GOP or US politics in general?
