French PM Francois Hollande is now proposing a joint Russia-NATO alliance against ISIS.

You know things are getting serious when the French and Russians begin cooperating. It took Hitler to do that the last time :/

It's not so surprising about France and Russia potentially forming an alliance against ISIS *though* there is still a major thing they disagree on, and that's the Assad government. France has been one of the most vocal proponents for his removal.

As for the U.S participating in a joint-alliance with Russia, that seems less realistic to me--primarily because both nations significantly distrust each other and have incompatible agendas. I.E, the U.S wants to see Assad go and supports the al-Nusra front, whereas Russia is content for Assad to stay (for a while) or at least give the Syrian people the chance to elect him *without* him being forcibly removed by the U.S and other Western allies.

It's a possibility that they may do so. However, it's unrealistic to expect that even large-scale US-Russia military cooperation against the ISIL will do anything to fix the abysmal state of US-Russia relations. Such alliances do nothing to address the elephant in the room, which is Eurasianism and opposition to US interventionism and the expansion of NATO. The only way to fix these problems is to address them directly and to be willing to do what it takes to resolve the situation.

I said to someone shortly after the attacks that it was time for some US-Russia bonding. It looks like I was right.

That is not true at all.

What is extremely irritating to me is that I know that Putin knew that Obama would not do what was necessary to prevent ISIL's rise; he knew (as any reasonable person fully possessed of their senses) that an ISIL attack on the West was imminent because the Obama administration failed to timely intervene; and he knew that when they launched some kind of an attack against the West, due to his alliance with Syria, that NATO would come to him.

Even though Putin's interior is falling apart, the man is a tactician whose skill is analogous to Napoleon, because what that means is that Crimea is and will effectively remain unchallenged. This is a way for him to restore his pretense of legitimacy, while he then moves to exploit the vast petrochemical and other mining resources off of Crimea's coast. So, Russia becomes more of a gas station oligarchy (reinforcing the status quo) with the caveat that the Russian people have their little 19th century land grab to hang their hats on, such as will distract them from their internal strife, while Putin moves the world in a direction more favorable to his ends with this convenient crisis in Syria and Iraq.

Yes it is, the U.S has specified on numerous occasions that it wants the Assad government removed and has additionally provided weaponry to the al-Nusra front *and* Syrian rebels.

And:

Some of the weaponry given to the Syrian rebels gets directly traded with al-Nusra.

I think this sort of alliance is needed in order to defeat IS and end the European migration crisis. The USA and Russia need to come to a joint agreement on how to carry out military action to defeat IS and end the Syrian civil war. In my view the most effective strategy would entail the USA undertaking a ground operation to retake IS territory in Iraq and hand it back to the Iraqi government. Russia could undertake a ground operation against Assads opponents in syria and hand control back to its ally Assad. Syria could effectively become a puppet state for Russia. This would entice Putin into a deal and despite it's down sides the elimination of IS and other terror groups plus the end of the civil war would be worth it. A major improvement in the migration crisis would also happen if the war ended. There would be a short term increase in refugees while the invasion was in process though obviously.

Well it really wasn't France. France was a conquered state and Vinchy was just a random puppet state.
