Many states have open primaries, which mean that any registered voter can vote in either parties primaries. Since Trump is considered to be the weakest candidate in a general election, is it likely that crossover democrats could vote in open primary states and help give Trump the GOP nod as they attempted to do with Santorum in 2012?

This effect can also go both ways, though--Thad Cochran won his primary in Mississippi in 2014 due to crossover votes from democrats who worried his opponent was too far right.

Would you crossover vote? If so, why? I'm voting for Trump obviously, but if I wasn't I would consider voting in the democratic primary (especially if it was more competitive). I would vote for the candidate I liked best, though, not the one I perceived as the weakest.

Any Trump democrats here?

Reasons why primaries should be closed, a person should vote only in their own party's primary.

I'm sure there are lots of (Reagan) Democrats out there who would just love Trump, who I'm sure would vote for him. They're unlikely to be here on DDO, though. Overall, we are a very left-wing, progressive or libertarian community. Not many social conservatives to be found in these parts.

In a tangential note, as a general rule, I think open primaries are a bad idea. Only registered Republicans and Democrats should be able to vote for their party's nomination. It's just not fair to let Democrats meddle in the Republican nomination process, or to allow Republicans to meddle in the nomination of Democrats.

I agree. Just curious, do you know why this is permitted in the first place?

Some people believe the myth that independents get left out where primaries are closed. This is of course absurd, because independents can simply register to vote in whatever primary they like.

Well, my state has closed primaries. I know that I won't be voting for a republican for anything more important than a county executive.

What about a system where independents are free to choose which primary to vote in? This is my preferred system as I really don't want to register as a member of any party because I hate both of them and don't want to be spammed with mail...but I also want to vote in the primary

Though, I will say that I like my GOP county executive, and if he runs for a second term in 2018, I'll be voting for him again. I voted for him in 2014, too, much to the shock of some of my friends.

Clinton is winning the democratic nomination handily. Trump and Rubio are in a tight race and as a blue state Republican voter (http://fivethirtyeight.com...) your vote actually counts for a lot...what do you do?

So you would strategically vote, but you just hate Donald that much.

But the Cruz missile is a secret genius, I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow managed to become president...or a SCOTUS judge or something. He is unlikable, and creepy, and he scares me for the same reason. I am shocked people are deluded into believing that he is a true conservative, when he's really just an opportunistic as$.

Well, my state has closed primaries. I know that I won't be voting for a republican for anything more important than a county executive.

Would you consider cross over voting if it didn't?

It really depends on the situation.

Clinton is winning the democratic nomination handily. Trump and Rubio are in a tight race and as a blue state Republican voter (http://fivethirtyeight.com...) your vote actually counts for a lot...what do you do?

I vote for Ted Cruz.

He died

You basically want me to choose between Trump and Rubio, but I wouldn't vote for either of them. Ever.

Wait what's so bad about Rubio that the Cruz missile doesn't have in spades???

Is it the enormous ears?

The Cruz missile will never be President. You know what, Ben Carson would be an even better vote. Or Fiorina.

So you would strategically vote, but you just hate Donald that much.

But the Cruz missile is a secret genius, I wouldn't be surprised if he somehow managed to become president...or a SCOTUS judge or something. Lizard Clinton's lover, probably.

Keep hating! I'm one of the all time greatest political pundits, believe be when I say she's a lizard person

Haha he's almost certainly been planning to run for president since he was like a teenager. The guy has ambition. A true slytherin

Yea, I am not for open primaries. If any democrats want to legitimately vote GOP, they can save it for the general. Open primaries encourage messing with the parties. I could see democrats voting for Trump knowing it will be a easy target for the general.

No good comes from this. After all, parties are NOT even beholding to the primary process at all.

What about a system where independents are free to choose which primary to vote in?

They already are, simply by registering for either party. Just because you're registered to a party does not mean that you must vote for that party. For example, my mother is a registered Republican but will be voting for Hillary Clinton.

This is my preferred system as I really don't want to register as a member of any party because I hate both of them and don't want to be spammed with mail...but I also want to vote in the primary

You register to vote in the primaries. That's the whole point of belonging to a party, for almost all people. You can opt out of the mailings.
