I have several rifles and a shotgun which I have either inherited or which have been given to me by family members over the years. Everyone in my family owns guns, as well.

I do not keep them in my apartment... they live with my mother and brother.

Lol...I think you know what I mean...in that I would never allow a friend to store gun's at my place, for any guest to bring a gun onto the premises, and my spouse and family would also have to agree to not let guns in the house. If my husband wanted a gun, he'd have to keep them in a storage locker or something.

The same with me. My family has a LOT of guns (like over 10), but virtually all of them were inherited from family or friends. The only time any of us have bought a gun was when I bought a WWII russian rifle because I wanted to have a WWII gun.

I do like guns, though. I plan to get my concealed carry permit at some point

A gun should always be in some kind of safe when it's being stored. The only exception is some kind of home defense gun right next to your bed or something. My friend used to have a lever-action .30-30 propped up against his bed which was pretty cool but obviously you can't have that if you have kids around or anything

I agree. In Austria, you are required to to store guns in a very particular way. They cannot be stowed while loaded, and must be kept in a locked drawer or cabinet. The ammunition and gunpowder must be stored in a separate room of the house (not just a different cabinet, but a different room) and also in a locked drawer or cabinet. You must submit to random inspections by police officials to ensure that you are storing your guns in a way that meets the conditions set out by law, or your permit can be revoked and your guns confiscated. There are additionally safety precautions in place if you have kids--the storage cabinets must be a certain height off the floor, and you have to have a special kind of hard-to-pick lock, for instance.

But, even this wouldn't satisfy me. I just would never want a gun in the house--ever. Period. Not even a disassembled one.

Yup. My grandfathers (both dead now) had pretty big gun collections... they've been since distributed throughout the family. My grandmother (paternal) has a pretty sizable collection of antique and self defense weapons herself.

As I think I've said before, I grew up around guns. I don't need one... at least not now. There may be a point in my life where I need a concealed carry permit, but no one wants to kill me now, and police response times where I live (my specific neighborhood, not the city at large) are less than 60 seconds.

Ehh... I disagree. I mean, if I had kids I would always keep any guns I had in the house in a safe, but I don't see the problem with keeping a gun in the bedside table, or the glove compartment of a car. The whole point in having them is to be able to use them if needed, and if your house is being broken into, or you're being carjacked, you're not going to have time to open a safe or run home to open your safe.

The only exception is some kind of home defense gun right next to your bed or something.

There you go...

My friend used to have a lever-action .30-30 propped up against his bed which was pretty cool but obviously you can't have that if you have kids around or anything

Maybe... depends on the kids.

It shouldn't. There are a lot of (white) democrats who own guns. Go to Vermont, New Hampshire, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc.

You'd be surprised how many rich democrats own guns... New York, LA, Chicago, Miami.... and especially Atlanta, and in Virginia. Most just don't talk about it because it's a social faux pas in many liberal circles.

What if you lived in a rural area and needed a farm gun for things like killing vermin?

You couldn't get a gun for that reason in Austria. Austrians have to provide a "compelling reason" for gun ownership before they can get cleared to own a gun. It's not like they can just get a gun on a whim. The authorities would probably just say, "buy a cat, not a gun."

Some examples of "compelling reasons," might be self-defense (if you can demonstrate you are actually under credible threat), participation in a gun club, or hunting. But merely saying, "a gun is useful on the farm" isn't enough. But, before you can get a gun for hunting, you have to get a hunting license.

Yes

You own a gun?

I have several rifles and a shotgun which I have either inherited or which have been given to me by family members over the years. Everyone in my family owns guns, as well.

I do not keep them in my apartment... they live with my mother and brother.

I think that a lot of the rhetoric is overstated, but it really is true that in a lot of circumstances when seconds count the police are minutes away. That and ultimately you're responsible for your own safety. But when you're living in a nice neighborhood with police who could get there in less than a minute you should be fine.

I think growing up around guns gives us a different mentality than many people who never shot one until their adulthood (or not at all). They're tools, and tools that can be deadly and have to be greatly respected, but not really boogeymen. And they're also not these all powerful sceptres that turn ordinary men into gods like a lot of the obsessive gun enthusiasts seem to believe

I know that, but where I live, most of us a very rich, liberal democrats living in very safe, high-employment areas. So, like, no one owns a gun.

You'd be surprised how many rich democrats own guns... New York, LA, Chicago, Miami.... and especially Atlanta, and in Virginia. Most just don't talk about it because it's a social faux pas in many liberal circles.

Yeah, but not in HoCo, MoCo, or CoCo MD. It's just not the culture. People there are more likely to own a yacht than a gun.
