Here we go - time for the rhetoric and the bullsh!t. Hopefully, we get to see a thug life Obama moment again.

This time though, we don't get an orange toad in the back to make fun of - we get the bitchy Paul Ryan.

Oh I love the guy (despite my disagreements), and I love his speeches.

Paul Ryan is new to this and looks extremely out of his game and beyond uncomfortable.

Every time he does an elongated blink (2+ seconds), take a shot.
Every time he looks over to Biden, take a shot.
Every time he drinks his water, take a shot.

(He drank a shitload of water during the VP debate of 2012 - that's why I'm putting it in.)

what I heard
criminal justice reform
prescription abuse
fixing emigration
protecting kids from gun violence

I tuned out after that, too much applause, I hate that, just let the man speak.

You can tell he spent a lot of time finely calibrating the tone of this speech --- its politically restrained and clothed in realism, with a few obvious applause lines.

But I must say I miss the spirited oratory of his early years. There's no energy, no eloquence, no vibrant prose, no commandment of emotion.... this is more a talk than a speech.

The ability to move from an idealist going into a Democratic-majority Congress and a realist leaving a Republican-majority Congress is important.

Indeed,... that's why I cited his realism as a positive attribute. What I'm criticizing is his diction and delivery (which is decidedly more restrained and simplified than what he's capable of).

Well, for Americans to hear 2008 Obama speaking right now would be out of place for their view of the country and the world.

lol well I'm not saying he should go on some lofty excursion,... but just to speak with passion and precision; that's something that would energize the democrats, fundamentally change the political atmosphere, and keep himself relevant.

I'm sure his sobriety is deliberate ... probably to not repel his critics at the outset; but he can squeeze in some chruchillian rhetoric here and there.

He has to speak to... Well, people who need to be told not to be mean to childeren. That is saying a lot. The POTUS had to use the SOTU to tell Americans to stop being mean to childeren.
