A lot of you may not know, but a Japanese national woman, Asami Nagakiya, who played [steel] pan with the band Silver Stars was found in the Queen's Park Savannah.

Mayor of PoS, Tim Kee, made some ... comments...

"You know before Carnival I did make a comment about vulgarity and lewdness. The woman has the responsibility to ensure that [she is] not abused. And my argument was you could enjoy Carnival without going through that routine " of prancing and partying. Then why you can"t continue with that and maintain some kind of dignity? You have to let your imagination roll a bit and figure out was there any evidence of resistance or did alcohol control? Therefore involuntary actions were engaged in, and so on".It"s a matter of, if she was still in her costume " I think that"s what I heard " let your imagination roll."

News reports on it:

Petition- http://www.guardian.co.tt...

Some videos at the side show the displeasure of fellow Trinidadians.

My dad and I were talking, and we both agree- while rape is never justified, there are sick people out there. People should not put themselves in precarious situations. We must be careful what we do and with whom. Honestly, the best thing is to go out and fete or celebrate Carnival, with a group of friends. That's not guaranteeing your safety, of course. But you could be safer in numbers.

Unfortunately, there are still some backward people in society, who believe that rape is justified if a woman is acting "vulgar." For those people, please refer to video 3.

Now, some ladies have gone in front of the T&T Embassy in England and outside the mayor's house, and pulled their pants down. Which I don't agree with, because that wasn't proving a point, at all.

I care about how to solve problems,
which is what everyone else should also care about.

Your opinion- was he justified in his statements?

Is the attire or the way people carry themselves, indicative of whether their rape is justified?

Many times when men were on trial for rape the defense attorney will bring up the subject of what the victim was wearing, and makes believes this is relevant, as if by dressing like a slut the victim was asking to be raped. This idea is fiction, believe me, most of the girls I want to have sex with are not dressed like sluts. It is not the clothes, it is what is in them that matters.
What feminists disaprove of is the idea that dressing slutty causes rape, and in some way the rapist is less to blame because she was dressed like that.
They have these demonstrations called a slutwalk where women dress like sluts as an act of protest. I would like to see more of these.

I agree with you and your Dad. Obviously, the punishment for rape should be severe, no matter what kind of clothes a woman is wearing; however, women also have the responsibility protect themselves, just as people have the responsibility to protect their homes from burglary.

I also add that such festivals are promoting an unhealthy culture, and instead of making these comments, he should work towards banning or discouraging people from participating in the carnival...
The thing is, I hate relativism. I hate relativism more than I hate everything else, excepting, maybe, fibreglass powerboats... What it overlooks, to put it briefly and crudely, is the fixed structure of human nature. - Jerry Fodor
