I don't agree with him, but he had his convictions and served our country as best he knew how.

It's sort of sad that his death will immediately become a political issue.

While I disagreed with his politics, I certainly was able to respect him as a jurist. He was one of the most brilliant to ever sit on the bench.

It bothers me that CNN, within less than 60 seconds of reporting his death, discussed who Obama would appoint to take his place.

I agreed with him on nothing, but I immensely respected his conviction and razor-sharp intellect. This really sucks.

Obama should definitely nominate someone who has already been vetted. So, that narrows the possible pool down.

All I saw on the comments section was liberal after liberal rejoicing that a man who served with conviction but happened to have different views died... I can't believe the amount of hatred and duress these idiots have for people that share different views. Then again, conservatives have the same, but with due cause.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, this is the statement Trump just published.

"I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to the Scalia family after the passing of Justice Scalia. Justice Scalia was a remarkable person and a brilliant Supreme Court Justice, one of the best of all time. His career was defined by his reverence for the Constitution and his legacy of protecting Americans" most cherished freedoms. He was a Justice who did not believe in legislating from the bench and he is a person whom I held in the highest regard and will always greatly respect his intelligence and conviction to uphold the Constitution of our country. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time."

You know as well as I do how far to the left I am... but rejoicing over a political opponent's death is classless.

Having probably read more opinions he wrote than any other active member on this site (bluesteel would be the only one who is likely to be more well versed in Scalia-dom than I), he was a historically defining jurist whose influence on every level of society is unparalleled in Supreme Court history.

His writing and analytical reasoning ability was among the most well developed and sophisticated.

While I disagree with his politics, I can certainly respect what he did for this country.

What I hope is that Obama is able to, despite the Senate being in the situation that it's in, appoint and confirm someone to take Scalia's place.

If I had to guess, that candidate will be a centrist white guy.

I disagree with this. I think, rather than nominating a centrist white person specifically, Obama will nominate someone who has already been vetted by this or a recent Congress. That should make it easier to push their nomination through. Jeh Johnson or Loretta Lynch would both be good choices in that respect.

Won't happen. You know Reid wouldn't allow it if situations are reversed.

No way the court confirms anyone. I'd wager the only nominee with a chance would be a stopgap Sandra Day O'Connor nomination. But I think Obama will nominate a liberal, letting the Dem. nominee rile up the base.

Yes. There are some people whose graves it's ok to dance on. Hitler. Stalin. etc. but not a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Having probably read more opinions he wrote than any other active member on this site (bluesteel would be the only one who is likely to be more well versed in Scalia-dom than I), he was a historically defining jurist whose influence on every level of society is unparalleled in Supreme Court history.

Won't happen. You know Reid wouldn't allow it if situations are reversed.

Yes he would; because Reid, like any well seasoned statesmen, understands that these things happen and they could happen to a Republican president in the future.

What I expect to see Obama do is appoint someone that the conservatives in the senate will agree too, though; and that person is going to be a centrist white guy.

Loretta Lynch will never get the nomination; she doesn't have the resume, and Obama has already appointed two women, one of whom was latino.

I fully expect a white guy, who has had a distinguished career a non-partisan judge on the federal courts. If I had to guess, he'll be from the 7th or the 8th circuit.

If I had to guess, that candidate will be a centrist white guy.

No way the court confirms anyone. I'd wager the only nominee with a chance would be a stopgap Sandra Day O'Connor nomination. But I think Obama will nominate a liberal, letting the Dem. nominee rile up the base.

Obama won't appoint a liberal, because he is intelligent enough to know that a hard-liner liberal would not be confirmed. Like, if Obama nominated Loretta Lynch, the senate would probably laugh.

The Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 3-8 on Loretta Lynch for becoming the Attorney General. I think she would get in at around the 55-45 range.

A staffer for one of the Utah Senators said there's less than zero chance of the Senate confirming anyone nominated by Obama, but that would kill the GOP's public credibility as competent for getting things done even in their own Party - it would nearly triple the longest length to confirm a SCOTUS replacement.
