Muslim girls in Switzerland have been denied citizenship for refusing to swim in a pool of boys in swimming classes.

http://www.usatoday.com...

Is this discriminatory against Muslims? Or was the Swiss government justified in doing so, since this act could have been viewed as sexism?

That's discrimination. A minor issue does not give licence to deny someone citizenship

Except the fact that these girls were religious zealots that couldn't handle being around the other gender, that obviously does tell something about them. Avoiding a swimming class because of the opposite gender pretty much means you're advocating for gender segregation. It does hint that these muslim women don't believe in gender equality if they think only a wife and husband or relatives of opposite gender should be around each other. Gender equality is part of Swiss society, and they disrespect that aspect by wanting strict gender segregation based on religious fundamentalism.

Regardless if they're sexist or not, we don't and/or shouldn't deny citizenship based on ones beliefs, in America we value freedom but don't deny citizenship to authoritarians, there are very many sexist people all over the world and probably some in Switzerland who aren't denied citizenship for their beliefs no matter how sexist or racist they are. They also might just be uncomfortable swimming with boys. Not wanting to take swimming lessons isn't a reason to deny citizenship.

It's less about beliefs and more about cultural assimilation. Switzerland is strict on limiting citizenship to those who culturally assimilate to a fair extent. Personally, I believe most other nations should look up to Switzerland in many aspects, with immigration being one of them. Other European countries don't know how to handle immigration, since they allow mass migration of unqualified economic migrants from the middle east posing as "refugees." The Swiss however are intelligent enough not to do this.

Fair point but you forget that
1) These two girls are just teenagers
2) They might just be uncomfortable swimming with boys.
Also people should be allowed to have beliefs regardless of culture.

You call it zealotry, they call it modesty.

that obviously does tell something about them. Avoiding a swimming class because of the opposite gender pretty much means you're advocating for gender segregation.

Avoiding a girl's washroom because you're a male means you advocate for gender segregation, avoiding a girl's change room because you're a man means you advocate for gender segregation.

It does hint that these muslim women don't believe in gender equality if they think only a wife and husband or relatives of opposite gender should be around each other.

And where, if anywhere, does indicate gender inequality or sexism? It's just modesty.

Gender equality is part of Swiss society, and they disrespect that aspect by wanting strict gender segregation based on religious fundamentalism.

Not wanting to swim with men is religious fundamentalism??

It's a little much to deny them citizenship based on that. However, these are trying times in Europe and Muslims need to be sent a strong message that it's Europe's way or the highway. No more capitulation to Muslim sensibilities.

If other European countries followed Switzeland's lead, they might not have the disgraceful Muslim problems.

Ok, I have to admit that's pretty stupid. Out of all the things they use to keep them from becoming Swiss, they use this. I would say it is discriminatory based on a stupid incident like this.

They came to Switzerland. Switzerland didn't come to them. If they wanted better than Pakistan or Iraq, they have to adjust or at least try. If they refuse, Pakistan is right there for them.

If you refuse to assimilate into a culture, why would that culture want or need you presence? If a Christian walked into a gay bar and tried to tell them they couldn't be gay, you'd applaud once they were kicked out. If you hate gays, don't go in a gay bar. If you don't like Switzerland, don't go to Switzerland.

I get that's in Switzerland's best interests to keep them out, however refusing to swim in a pool and that being the reason, is pretty unfair in my opinion.

When you go to another country it is not that country's responsibility to change for you. It's your responsibility to adjust to them.

They must be held to the same standards as all other religious people. If they were Christians we'd tell them to grow up. Otherwise you keep them in a state of backward thinking.

Europe was very liberal and tried assimilating Muslims in thinking it would be like assimilating any other group, and they got burned, so now they are getting picky about who gets in.

Is this discriminatory against Muslims? Or was the Swiss government justified in doing so, since this act could have been viewed as sexism?

Switzerland has denied people citizenship for wearing sweatpants before. It's why I love them. They have incredibly strict immigration standards for a reason: Switzerland is bound by its common culture, so in order to become Swiss one must fully embrace said culture.

Other European countries should look up to Switzerland, especially with their immigration policies. While the rest of western Europe accepts massive amounts of middle eastern "refugees" that commit crime and don't assimilate, Switzerland actually knows how to control immigration.

Yeah, and the thing is that Switzerland actually has almost exactly the same percentage of Muslim population that Britain does. They just actually manage it intelligently, and don't let uneducated, poor Muslims who don't want to assimilate in.
