At least twice a week for the past few weeks (it seems), President Obama continues to say that "unless you are Native American, you immigrated (or came from) somewhere else."

This is simply illogical and inaccurate . First, unless you live in a small section of Africa, your ancestors migrated from somewhere else. Native Americans didn't just pop into existence in what is now known as America, as Obama keeps implying. They migrated to America as well, just like everyone else. Specifically, they migrated from Asia in three successive waves, first by land and then by sea.

So while it may make what he thinks in an interesting soundbite, it's simply untrue. It would be much more accurate to say, "unless you are Native American, someone else was here before you." But then this could also be broken down, since Native Americans arrived in different waves.

Obama talks about how "unless you're a native American, you immigrated here" for the purpose of emphasizing common identity, and ameliorating the extant tension that exists between those who live in the US now, and those who are coming here.

It's something he believes, I think, sincerely, but I also think it's not a line that has any currency with the majority of Americans. The overwhelming majority of people were born here, themselves, as were their parents, and their grandparents, etc. which is why the narrative is going to gain his party's narrative little ground.

What he was trying to say is that Native Americans were the first people here.

What he was trying to say is that Native Americans were the first people here.

And if he said that, then it'd be true.

But it seems he is trying to spin it in such a way as to make others feel somehow guilty for not agreeing with unfettered immigration, unless you happen to be a Native American. But then that implies that Native Americans would for some reason agree with such immigration, which I would garner a wild guess would not be their stance.

And just today in a press conference he actually said Iraq was doing its best to secure its borders like it was a good thing. So why is good for Iraq and not for America?

His entire stance on immigration is largely hypocritical.

This is also not true. Artifacts from the Clovis people dating back 10,000 or more years ago have been found in southwest America. This is THOUSANDS of years prior to Indians showing up in the Americas.
