What do you think is the single most important political issue facing the U.S. today and why? It's okay if it's economy related but I think saying "a restricted market" is a little too broad......

Monetary system. Need to abolish legal tender laws and capital gains taxes so that the market can choose among competing currencies.

Lol. I remember someone asked this a few months ago, and almost everyone said "legalize drugs."

Haha. That thread was hilarious, because someone disagreed and asserted that all the other peeps on that thread must've been high, to which a few people said, "you got that right..." Good times.

The drug war is like, $55bn/yr. Its bad, fine. But even if it were 10x worse, it would still not be as bad as the military, business cycles, or the inflation tax.

People just like to build their political ideology around a "victim" group so they can be the enlightened heroes, while their opposition gets painted the bigot.

Its like gay marriage. Yeah, you're right there's inequality, but who the f*ck cares when the IMF and World Bank are murdering zillions of people.

In some ways, I agree with this. However, while we cannot do much about the real problems in this world, I think it might be prudent to deal with the small inequities in the meanwhile.

Some do theorize, though, that those very issues are literally meant to be distractions from the true f*ckedupedness of this world. And, I'm willing to bet that our lovely distracted appreciate it.

Without a doubt it's the burgeoning economic collapse. That should take precedence over all other problems.

Slight exaggeration. It could be true, but the full extent of their shenanigans will never be known. Definitely they are largely responsible for most of South America and Africa being messed up, which is where my "zillions of people" phrase comes from.

Yeah, but is most of this actually intentional or incidental? I would imagine that the IMF might try to issue loans for infrastructure development in African nations, but the dictatorships just spend it on the military or some other corrupt extravaganza.

Also, is "An Economic Hitman" a reliable book..? I've never read it, so this is a legit question of curiosity.

Porn. It must be banned because it's destroying the very fabric of American society in its sinister attempt to overthrow Christian civilization. If this is done, we are all destined for hell, which will suck because it's really hot down there...

Ben Powell did some great work on the World Bank. He believes that they are legitimately not trying to hurt anyone... but they also don't get rewarded if they help anyone, and their policies have been shown to destroy economies. Powell says he hates it when people refer to african countries as "developing", because since the WB has gotten involved, the economy of africa has contracted. If you're getting poorer, you aren't developing.

But I think the IMF and USAID do have malicious motives. They systematically aid dictators and stay away from aiding democracies. Their basic MO is to lend the dictator a bunch of money, make sure he doesn't pay it back (one way or another, you can bribe him not to pay you back, etc), and then appropriate national resources for western corporations. Ever hear about disasters following "privatization" of public utilities? Yo.
Also, is "An Economic Hitman" a reliable book..? I've never read it, so this is a legit question of curiosity.
I think its mostly reliable. When I was interested a while ago I double checked some of the more sinister accusations it made, and the ones I could find checked out.

"Dropping the Soap" affects almost 95% of all inmates and makes prison a fun experience for all 95%. Our prisons have no deterrence factor solely because of "Dropping the Soap".
