I'd say Net Positive. He exposes the dark, corrupt and outright illegal things the government is doing. But he's kinda careless in how he just dumps all the data without concern for what it contains.

In general whistle blowers are a vital part of good governance.

Obviously I don't support the sexual assault part of his history. But he's been stuck in that embassy for a while now, so he can't hurt anyone and still publish government secrets.

"If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?" -- Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

IMO his good actions do not cover up his bad actions, so is true the other way around. We can acknowledge that overall he is helping the world while having deep personal flaws.

He didn't upload, he just linked to it, from what I understand. Manufactured outrage, for the most part.

A complete net positive. He has shown the documented corruption in the American political system, and for that, we all owe him a debt.

Mainstream journalism has gone to hell in a handbasket. Agenda/narrative-shaping takes precedence over just putting truth out there and letting people make their own judgments. In this environment you have to have the Julian Assanges of the world putting it all out there.

In a world that ever increasingly relies upon the openness of information for direction, he checks political power.

They haven't been proven now, have they? You can't accuse someone of rape just because a woman said so.

That's because Assange cowered in an embassy, waiting for the statue of limitations to run out. Some hero.

As for answering the OP, Assange is a mere extension of Russia's propaganda war. An internet troll made flesh.

He is not attractive in any respect, but what I really dislike about him is how he makes his money.

Assange is a broker in international espionage who secures his freedom by essentially blackmailing every major government, while putting US diplomatic workers and US intelligence workers at risk.

People who regard him as any species of a hero do so because they don't have the background to recognize Assange's real motives/interests.

Assange is not a good person, in any respect.
