Nuclear power plants are a very good source of energy, and generally are environmentally friendly if properly managed. However Jill Stein (the green party candidate) has called nuclear power plants "weapons of mass destruction" https://twitter.com...

Thoughts?

How "green" of them. Nuclear energy is highly efficient and environmentally friendly. Compare that to solar energy which yields 1/10th of what other sources can do.

Its not that easy of a debate. Nuclear energy deters nuclear prolifieration, costs lots of money to build and maintain and isn't very long term. The facilities break down quickly. There was a TED talk debate on it

Yeah, Stein talks about the GOP being anti-science, but her and the rest of the Green party have their own anti-science problems: GMOs, vaccines, nuclear power... It's so hard to find a party that is vigilant about following the evidence when it contradicts their core ideals.

Wrong, Nuclear energy is one of the cheapest energy sources there are.

They don't break down if there is proper management.

True, the Green party is probably one of the most anti-science parties there are out there. Radical environmentalism is far from scientific.

It's also extremely cheap, the most efficient energy source, very safe, reliable, and creates lots of financial gain.

While I am pro nuclear power (I did a debate about this back some time ago), the people objecting to nuclear power have some very valid points.

As a power source, it is just too damn good to pass-up, but it is no slam dunk either. It is worth the debate.

Of the few accidents that have occurred in the last 40 years, the ramifications are multi-generational Most European countries have decided to not extend nuclear power due to these factors

This is the current NSDA debate topic, and I don't want all the research I've done, or my strategy, out on the web for people to find yet. If you want to debate this with my after the end of October, though, we can do it then.

Fission plants for their flaws are worth having if we want to continue nuclear research, so we may one day have fusion capabilities.

I agree that nuclear research is important, but I think confining research to a few military facilities, which are limited to research, is ideal. I don't want "nuclear power," to become something we find ourselves relying on.

While I am pro nuclear power (I did a debate about this back some time ago), the people objecting to nuclear power have some very valid points.

As a power source, it is just too damn good to pass-up, but it is no slam dunk either. It is worth the debate.

Why? Nuclear power is a relatively cheap renewable energy source and would only grow the economy if anything.

Nuclear power has comparatively high capital costs, significant environmental risks, serious NIMBY problems and the unresolved issue of waste storage. It's not a very attractive technology relative to alternatives like combined cycle natural gas given the supply glut from all the fracking.

The Green Party movement worldwide was partially born out of the Anti-Nuclear movement. I personally agree, because of Fukushima and the waste issue. It's simply not sustainable and the Green Party is for sustainability.

I thought that most of the green party was against nuclear power...

How "green" of them. Nuclear energy is highly efficient and environmentally friendly. Compare that to solar energy which yields 1/10th of what other sources can do.

Again, the Greens around the world were anti-Nuclear from the start. It's not sustainable though because of the waste issue.
Germany is an example that Greens often point to, and this is appropriate as the anti-nuclear push in Germany was really led by the Greens and Die Linke.

Yeah, Stein talks about the GOP being anti-science, but her and the rest of the Green party have their own anti-science problems: GMOs, vaccines, nuclear power... It's so hard to find a party that is vigilant about following the evidence when it contradicts their core ideals.

1) There is nothing in the Green Platform on Vaccines except support for an AIDS Vaccine. And the Anti-Vax thing has already been debunked.
2) The GMO thing is she wants testing and lables. She doesn't want a ban and other Green Parties agree. Go to the UK or Germany and they are more adamant on this issue.
3) Nuclear Power is simply not sustainable and the Greens grew from the Anti-Nuclear movement
