So for all of you naysayers, I think that you are going to be surprised.
You must realize that some progress has been made. If the unemployment
rate here in the US goes below 9 percent, then it is a done deal.
Not to mention the end of the current war in Iraq, and withdrawal of the
troops. What do you say ?

It's got about 13% more to go. Unemployment hasn't been decreasing at all since the "recovery" started. The published number (U3, currently 9%) changes, but it only counts people currently looking for work. If you count people who've been unemployed so long that they've stopped looking for work, then it's still about 22%. The U3 went down, but only because many unemployed people have stopped looking for work, not because they've gotten jobs.

That neither of those things actually happened.

He's gonna win. He has a 54% approval rating. At this point in their terms, Bush had like 45% and Clinton had 40%. I can't wait to see Beck and Palin cry.

I'm just worried the tea baggers might start violent protests.

AND that are only working part time and want more. But the only way to be fair when measuring the unemployment is to measure it the same way it was measured over the years. Otherwise, you are stuck comparing apples to oranges.

It really depends on his opponent and the rest of his term. If it's Palin he's guaranteed a win. That or I'm moving to Europe.

When people say "employment" they really mean "risk free use of existing capital". Everyone has the option to take out a loan and try to start a business or some other investment, but its risky. So it doesn't count as a "job opportunity" in the eyes of crude keynesian metrics.

No they don't. Banks don't give out open loans unless you have a damn good idea to begin with (and usually something to back that loan with, in case your business goes tits up, like most do).

*shrug* just take it out at super high interest.

Or go buy some apple seeds and plant them in your back yard. Or try to sell your urine on the internet to pot heads. There are a lot of opportunities, but they are risky and not very lucrative. There aren't "no jobs", there just aren't the kinds of jobs - risk free use of pre-existing capital - that the mainstream talks about.

They probably won't even give it to you even with the high interest rates, they will most likely laugh and throw you out of the building if you do not have a good credit score, hell even when I issue out loans I ask the other loan-sharks how fast and often the person pays back the money if they do not pay back at proper rates I simply reject the issuance of a loan even if they are willing to accept an 25% interest rate. Plain and simple: people who loan money will not loan to those with bad scores. This same principle is also applicable to the principle of bad business ideas especially ones that have been done so many times and have corporations with practical monopolies on the field, but more so with stupid business plans and ideas.

You don't have to get a business loan. You get go for a personal loan instead. Or you can rely on your own money to start up your business. Or you can just go into a business with very little start up costs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't all the troops supposed to have been withdrawn by now? Also, if the war's over, why was my dad's former student re-deployed?

His actions do not determine if he will be elected or not; his policies will. Currently, President Barack Obama has a very low approval rating. With a Republican Congress, any bill he is considering to propose is without avail.

Also, stop saying trash about Republicans. This is a debate website, not an extemp website. Try to keep political bias to a minimal.

His approval ratings are actually rather high, given the economy, and given where the past presidents were who got re-elected (Clinton and Bush).

being deployed is not the same as being in a war. The actual war in Iraq is over (as far as the US is concerned), but we still have troops there.

I was reading an incredibly fascinating article in Time magazine about some similarities between Obama and Reagan. http://www.time.com...

Obama is lucky because the GOP is disorganized and divided right now. It's like having a bunch of kinder-gardeners come running up trying to attack you instead of one big guy. The same thing happened with the democrats when Reagan was in power.

It's done deal; he'll get reelected. That's immediately what I thought when I saw that unemployment was down to 9 percent a week ago.

Republicans are too divided between traditional moderates and radical tea party.

It is very unlikely they will field any meaningful candidate, more likely another of a McCain caliber. 4 more years of bad economy would actually help force real change in this country. In that aspect, Obama will be fulfilling his campaign promise unwittingly.
