In many churches today, the "contemporary service" is roaring "praise and worship" music on distorted guitar. I have done my share of playing distorted guitar to that music myself. I understand the "appeal to youth," and don't object to that. There is one thing that really bothers me about all that; and that is the fact that in many places, the old hymns have fallen into disuse. I really miss those old songs. I would like to take a walk down Memory Lane and remember some of our favorites. One in particular that I like is:

I've wandered far away from God,
Now I'm coming home;
The paths of sin too long I've trod,
Lord, I'm coming home.
Refrain:
Coming home, coming home,
Nevermore to roam;
Open wide Thine arms of love,
Lord, I'm coming home.
I've wasted many precious years,
Now I'm coming home;
I now repent with bitter tears,
Lord, I'm coming home.
I'm tired of sin and straying, Lord,
Now I'm coming home;
I'll trust Thy love, believe Thy word,
Lord, I'm coming home.
My soul is sick, my heart is sore,
Now I'm coming home;
My strength renew, my home restore,
Lord, I'm coming home.
My only hope, my only plea,
Now I'm coming home;
That Jesus died, and died for me,
Lord, I'm coming home.
I need His cleansing blood I know,
Now I'm coming home;
Oh, wash me whiter than the snow,
Lord, I'm coming home.

I especially like the story behind this old hymn.

I hate to be cliche but Amazing Grace has been my favorite religious hymn for forever. Easily. I've always liked the story behind it as well.

Not a hymn, but its so beautiful, I'm sure you'll like it too. The best piece I have ever heard in my life.

What a friend we have in Jesus

All our sins and griefs to bear

What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer

Oh what peace we often forfeit

Oh what needless pain we bear

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations

Is there trouble anywhere

We should never be discouraged

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Can we find a friend so faithful

Who will all our sorrows share

Jesus knows our every weakness

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden

Cumbered with a load of care

Precious Savior, still our refuge

Take it to the Lord in prayer.

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee

Take it to the Lord in prayer

In his arms He'll take and shield thee

Thou wilt find a solace there.

The peace and solemnity of this thread is refreshing. Let's just hope Izbo10 doesn't ruin it by entering and ranting about hymns or the immorality of God...

Great topic. I agree too many churches have moved away from hymns and now have contemporaery songs that are light in substance.

Yes when thinking about the story behind it, it is even more beautiful. Consequently it is also one of my favorite movies.

Thaxted by Holst. When sung it has a bit of a patriotic message to it, very british, but i like the tune a lot. Obviously it's from Holst's Planets - Jupiter, good stuff, and fun to play.

That one is definitely up there on my list, and no, it's not cliche. : ). And, yes, it has an awesome story!

I have noticed that Izbo is respectful to those who respect him.

I love this one, especially the third verse:

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blest assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Do you see what I mean about being obsessed with izbo10? That's exactly what I was talking about.

(Sorry, this thread can go back on track now.)
