What I believe to be one of the first atheist movements would take place in the era of the Italian Renaissance. The idea of Humanism and Skepticism seem to start to show partial move towards atheism/"anti-church". During this time, the Church [in Rome] was a very powerful state, with a long spread influence over people, do to the lack of strong government and chaotic times in the medieval/dark ages of Europe. Up on re-evaluation of Church teachings (which have veered away from the original teachings during the time of the Church's acting as a powerful state) philosophers made the first steps to questioning the church, and religion is general.....
