So, if you're a Christian, for example, tell me how Christianity has improved your life. What effect it has on you. Or not believing in it, does atheism have any practical benefits?

I practice Buddhism. I am not a Buddhist, I do not know much about Buddhism but it seems to offer some good teachings. Like, meditation. I would not know of meditation if not for Buddhism and I am very thankful for this.

Ask not what your religion does for you but what you do for your religion.

Meh. Nothing, either way. But that's ok.

Well, maybe a little.

To answer the question. Uh, it's let me be a bit more free. Nothing much else besides negative things though.

I don't presume to speak for Paradox, but while Christianity makes me suffer I believe in it 100%.

Honestly, I just want to know how. How it made you suffer. And why you would follow a religion that makes you suffer. I know, happiness is not the most important thing, but realistically speaking, we are not machines, we follow happiness.

Then you should have no problem understanding why people believe according to where the evidence and their convictions lead rather than what's practical.

My faith in god has given me hope and a sense of purpose beyond the trivial pursuits of man and his vanity. I used to put my hope in people, they always without exception let you down or stab you in the back. My faith in god makes me strive for perfection even though I know I will never achieve it. Man always settles for the lowest possible standard at everything. My faith in god stops me from settling and lowering my standards. Man lies and deceives all the time. One look at politics is all the proof you need. People may fool you, but they aren't fooling god. With out my faith in god, I would be just like a politician, a lying cheating corrupt user. I would do what they do, convince myself I am helping people all the while playing and ripping off the system and the people. If what I am saying isn't true then why are the children of today saddled with 16 trillion in debt that they can never repay? All at the hands of the "hope of govt" all run by people. I never look to people for hope or inspiration. I look to myself and god. People are big downers and always try to tear down and mock everything and everyone.
It's not your views that divide us, it's what you think my views should be that divides us.

If you think I will give up my rights and forsake social etiquette to make you "FEEL" better you are sadly mistaken

If liberal democrats would just stop shooting people gun violence would drop by 90%

It's given me a legitimate, reasonable ethical hope that I would not and could not have otherwise; the kind of hope that has motivated countless others from dietrich bonhoeffer to mlk jr. I believe christianity is the best way to articulate this hope and this hope makes me better than i would be without it. There are other things (like intellectual satisfication etc) but they all tie back to my main point, i think. Truth sets us free.

That is by far the best answer I have seen. Through suffering I personally have learned certain virtues that have had a positive impact on my life and those around me.

Patience, self control and humility to name just a few.

Well said AMTY.

It astonishes me that Christians would be claiming the negative things their religion brings. Are you actually complaining/bemoaning? Did you seriously just say truth hurts? Realize that you have hope and a reason to live and be fvcking thankful for it.

Complaining or bemoaning. Whatever it is, I can not comprehend it.

Well I wasn't referring to you but seeing Christians, in response to the question of what their religion gives them, post negative things (I believe he meant it at least partially negatively and if not it's still a negative physiological state) just befuddles me. I'd expect answers like peace, happiness and meaning, the things I felt when I was Christian. Those are gifts to be envious of.

I don't envy those in others. I thank God for others at peace. I personally count personal suffering as a blessing. The things you mentioned are a result.
