There is a Tradition in main stream Christianity of Sacraments. On the main they come form Judaism and are based on the incarnation. Catholics have seven, Anglicans have three, I think, Lutherans two.

Since marriage is only a sacrament in the catholic tradition we now are faced with a problem because free societies are permitting what religions prohibit. If one's moral absolutes come from societies Law then the laws around abortion and/or gay marriage, as examples, seem reprehensible.

Is it not better that social laws stay devoid of specific religions morals in order to maintain the freedom for all to choose? Is not this the meaning of giving to caesar?
