In his most significant break with tradition yet, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of two young women at a juvenile detention center - a surprising departure from church rules that restrict the Holy Thursday ritual to men. No Pope has ever washed the feet of a woman before, and Francis's gesture sparked a debate among some conservatives and liturgical purists, who lamented he had set a "questionable example". Liberals welcomed the move as a sign of greater inclusiveness in the church.

I like him, too. Then again, I'm Catholic.

Of course, the washing of the feet is meant to be a representation of Jesus's washing of the the Disciples' feet, who were all men. It doesn't really matter to me, though.

The Catholic Church is typically 100-200 years behind the rest of the world, so this makes sense. Congrats on allowing women's feet to be symbolically washed by a Pope. Please alert us when another piece of banal minutiae arises signifying the Catholic Church's sluggish, inane, inhuman progress.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that he chose a girl from a Juvenile Detention Center, considering the church's problems with minors?

You mean the minor's problem from the Church?

Everything he does is for show.
If it was any real change, he would sell the wealth of the vatican off for the poor.

Clearly the real problem is all those kids who promised they would keep the tickle time a secret.

Even that would be for show. They'd never do it unless they thought they'd gain something.

Yeah, one of the women was a Serbian Muslim. That's a huge cultural boundary he crossed. I guess he's trying to repair relations between the Vatican and the Muslim world.

I see. Yeah, all the billions of dollars Bill Gates gave to charity must be for show, because he's still one of the richest men on he planet.

Do you even realize how rich the Vatican is? Much richer than Bill Gates. It would end poverty permanently.

Also, Bill Gates got his money by providing goods and services. The Vatican got its money by promising to do good works in the world with it. The situations are nowhere near analogous.
