"Let"s dispense with the crude metric of IQ and look at the actual lives led by atheists, and believers, and see how they measure up. In other words: let"s see who is living more intelligently.

And guess what: it"s the believers. A vast body of research, amassed over recent decades, shows that religious belief is physically and psychologically beneficial " to a remarkable degree.

In 2004, scholars at UCLA revealed that college students involved in religious activities are likely to have better mental health. In 2006, population researchers at the University of Texas discovered that the more often you go to church, the longer you live. In the same year researchers at Duke University in America discovered that religious people have stronger immune systems than the irreligious. They also established that churchgoers have lower blood pressure."

So...because someone is not willing to sacrifice what they consider their epistemological integrity in exchange for statistically significant promises of lower blood pressure, they are mentally ill?

Am I the only one worried about the mental health of someone who will believe in any kind of god whatsoever and change their lifestyle accordingly regardless of whether they intellectually and emotionally believe it?

You want to know what's REALLY unhealthy for you?

Being a genius. Go check out people with really high IQs then compare them to the average person. More depression, more history of psychosis, etc.

All in all, a very unimpressive argument.

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."-George Bernard Shaw.

Charles Darwin stated that atheism was not for the common peoples, because (often) the intelligencea could see the positive, when the common saw only the negative.
Sanity is only the belief of the vast majority population, often depending on the zeitgeist of the generation. Intelligence, thus, often becomes insanity, because it never changes, in striking similarity to the truth.

No one said it's dumb to get saved.

It's just dumb to say someone is mentally ill because they are willing to live with the consequences of what they consider to be true.

That doesn't mean they're mentally ill, though. Studies also show that the irreligious are likely more intelligent, based on decades of research and testing. In the same sense, I could argue that all religious people are idiots; but this is not true, clearly. Assumption fallacy! (That was a real study by the way).

Classic causality mistake. Religious belief = better health. The truth of the matter, different studies have clearly demonstrated that there are benefits of self deception. There are ways to identify those who have a tenancy to practice more self deception than others (we all do it). Regardless, every study I have read or heard about it, about 8 now, demonstrated a positive outcome from deceiving one's self. The best athelites have higher tenancies of increased self deception. Happier people have tendency of practicing more self deception. On and on and on.

Religion is nothing more than an extensive act of self deception.

Here is an WSJ article that shows some positives and negatives to self deception.

Atheists are mentally ill.

All research and evidence leads to the conclusion of these facts:

+Atheists are deeply depressed.
+Atheists have the higher suicide rate out of any belief system.
+Atheists suffer from social anxiety and negative perception (confidence issues).
+Atheists have an irrational hatred and obsession with religion leading to more social problems.
+There are no mental health benefits of atheism. It is devoid of rational thinking and mental protection.

Nice.

"A systematic review of sixty-nine studies of an initially healthy population showed (p < 0.001) that religiosity/spirituality was associated with lower mortality, but the association was negative for cardiovascular mortality. Furthermore, twenty-two studies of a diseased population showed no such effect (p = 0.19). So all they really found was that people who attend church regularly are healthier than those who don"t, and thus "organizational activity" (e.g., church attendance), and not religious belief, was associated with greater survival, and only in healthy populations."
