Why do you suppose early astronomy, medieval medicine, and all its theory of what causes diseases, all this, apparently written up by the best scientists and physicians of the day, is today recognized as mostly pure nonsense. Yet pure speculations written up by some ancient theologian like Thomas Aquinas is accepted as fact. In all these former cases it boils down to fallible man's opinions based on no real evidence but on appearances which are very deceptive. Thus common sense and logic to them said the sun travels around the earth, etc. Thomas' logic for instance, that things that exist must have a cause begs the question , if a god exists, then he must have a cause? Thomas also based all his thoughts on what he conjured up in his fallible human mind.

I don't think he ever said that all things have causes, I think he said that all contingent things have causes, and if God exists, he would be necessary and not in that category.
